Why do books get weeded?

Books get weeded for a variety of reasons and it is a task that needs to be
done in order to maintain a modern, up-to-date, and uselfull library
collection that meets the curriculum needs of the school. Those items weeded
from (or not added to) the collection may be disposed of as the librarian
deems appropriate.

Here are some simple quidelines that are followed when weeding the library
collection:
*poor phyical condition of book (old, worn, dirty, broken spine,
missing pages, vandalism, water damage, odor, mildew)
*Outdated information and/or illustrations (no longer relevant to
                                                 current times)
     *Inaccurate information and/or illustrations
*Older copies have been replaced with newer ones
*Crowding/limited access (the good books can't be found because of the
                               unnecessay ones)
     *Prejudiced, stereotyped and/or biased
*Lack of interest/poor circulation (item has not been cheked out in 3-5
years; Would YOU check it out?)
*Changes in school focus and/or priorites
*Duplicate copies are no longer needed in the collection
*Short-lived topics (faddish and no longer of interest)
