What do I do with the reading log?

Any books that your child reads from the library, home, or that I
send home should be written down on the reading log. I require
each student to read for 15-20 mins. each night. Please listen
to your child read and make it a fun event each day.

What books can go on the reading log?

Anybook that is read aloud together. Not every reading time has
to be your child reading to you. In fact, you are an excellent
model of what good reading sounds like and your child will pick
up on strategies by watching and interacting with you. Please
balance the time that you read aloud and the time that you allow
your child to read aloud.

How often does the reading log need to be turned in?

I require every student to turn in one complete log per month.
If you fill up a log before the end of the month you may return
it to school and begin a new log. You may also print off a new
log from the important documents icon on this website.

What if transportation changes before the end of the day?

Please try to make transportation as easy as possible for your
child. Changing from car rider to bus from day to day really gets
confusing for the kids and it is definietly confusing for me to
keep straight. Please make sure your child knows how they are
getting home each day and if there needs to be a change please
notify our front office and speak with them. They will make sure
that your child gets the message.

How do I know if a book is too hard for my child?

If your child misses 5 or more words on the first page of a book
it is too difficult. Please return it and check out something on
their level. Library books are chosen by the students and they
are told to look and see if they can read the book before it is
checked out.

What is the expectation for my child before and after school?

Before school-After your child is dropped off no earlier than
7:30am they may eat breakfast in the cafeteria or they head
straight to the gym and sit with our class. While sitting they
are required to have something to read everyday. It is a quiet
reading time until the teacher comes to pick up the class. Please
make sure your child is at school on time. We are in our room
working by 7:50am.

After school: Your child will be walked to the car rider,
daycare, latchkey, or bus rider destinations. If your child is a
car rider or daycare they are required to sit quietly with a book
to read while they listen for their name or daycare to be
called.
