Welcome back. I am looking forward to a great year.
Second grade is a big year for students in computer class. They
will be learning correct keyboarding technique. I will do a
project or two with the students before we start keyboarding. Once
we start keyboarding look for your child’s daily keyboarding report.
This will let you know which letters your child is learning. At
second grade I am more concerned with correct form than speed. Students
will begin by working through nine lessons that teach the letters of the
keyboard. Once students complete this task they will start
taking skill checks. Skill checks are short keyboarding
tests, which give the students a speed and accuracy score. Once
they achieve a score of 97 percent accuracy with 5 words per minute they are
allowed to move onto the next level. Each year some of my
students work through all nine levels before the end of year. When
this happens I take the students back to level 1 and cover the keys with
keyboard covers and jump their pass up to 8 words per minute. If
your child doesn’t reach this level don’t worry. This
is where I start the third the grade.
The levels are as follows:
Level 1: home row a s d f j k l ;
Level 2 : adds i t .
Level 3: adds o r n
Level 4: adds h e p
Level 5: adds w m c
Level 6: adds g y , and shift
Level 7: adds b u
Level 8: adds v x
Level 9: add q z
Later in the year, usually shortly after Christmas I have the students spend
one day on keyboarding skills and one day working on other computer skills.
