Embracing Catholic principles while striving for academic excellence.”

I hope you enjoyed Rise & Shine today!  The students were very brave to get up in front of everyone and they looked so cute!  Seeing how excited and engaged in the story “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell,” reminds us that all people are touched by and through the power of literature.  I look forward to showcasing these students more throughout the year and will always give you notice so you can make plans accordingly.

This week the students enjoyed their time with Mrs. Stine in P.E. and Senor Holohan in Spanish class.  (See below for a schedule of the days and classes.)  In Religion we talked about God’s gift of people such as family and friends, who Jesus’ special friends were, and the ‘rule’ he gave us about loving your neighbor.  We also did many activities for our rhyme this week and everyone made it into the “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe Club!”  The students loved reciting it in different ways, like using a monster, mouse, or robot voice.  We worked on fine motor skills like writing with correct pencil grip, coloring, and cutting with scissors.  I have noticed that several of the students need help learning to spell their names orally, although they have begun to recognize it quickly.  Please allow your child to practice at home.

As an experiment:  When you’re curious about your child’s day of learning, try phrasing the question in a way other than the usual “What did you do at school today?”  As parents, we know the response to that one already: “nothing.”  Instead ask, “What did your (use a sense word such as hands/feet/mouth) do at school today?”

Next week:

Next week we will begin a new unit, All About Me.  Please begin to work with your child on learning their phone number, address, and birthday.  (They only need to be able to orally say the information, not write it down.)  I will gladly give them ‘club cards’ when they recite these to me, so encourage them to join the club!  I will be checking them throughout the year as these take some time to really learn.

For the next few months we will have a “color of the week.”  The first week will be red.  If your child has a red school shirt, try to have them wear it on Friday.  (Please don’t feel it necessary to spend any money buying one if they don’t have one.)

**To facilitate the learning of and ‘playing with’ our rhyme of the week, I am soliciting your trash to turn into our treasure.  If you are getting rid of any old items that make you think of a nursery rhyme please send it to school with your child.  Maybe an old buckle baby shoe, or a small candlestick, or anything you think we might use to make a “nursery rhyme box.”  We also take occupational type things for our dramatic play area.  We will continue to accept things throughout the year so just keep your eyes open when doing that deep cleaning at home.

Isaac will provide our snack next week.  Thank you Isaac and family!
