NEWS FLASH!
All groups must email their factum to OJEN no later than 5 p.m. on Monday. Remember to use your group's law firm name as the file name. Don't forget to copy me in on the email, so that I get a copy. OJEN's email: charterchallenge@ojen.ca TOSH's email: laura.kirbymcintosh@peelsb.com Remember, there is no longer any need to stress about putting things onto a data key. I will mark electronically using the factum file you send me on Friday. Good luck! P.S. For some stress relief, open the Courthouse Field Trip form--now on my Documents Page--something to look forward to! OJEN has created a citation that you can use if you're citing the trial judge's decision. Here it is: R. v. Provolone, 2009 CanLII 531535 (ON S.C.) Also, please add the section number you wrote about on the cover page of your factum. Make sure that the Authorities to Be Cited Pages are clear, also, so that I know who did which page. Thanks!
•  THE DISCUSSION BOARDS! •  Here's a great overview of Section 1 •  The Supreme Court of Canada website
•  Article about Gutu Daoud, one of the first Ottawa accused unable to get a lawyer. •  Legal Aid Ontario--tons of info here •  Uh...what's a "stay?"
•  This article was written by Edward Greenspan, a legal Aid lawyer. It is lawyer’s perspective on the issue of legal aid •  The statute (law) that created the legal aid program can be found here. •  The Ministry of the Attorney General
•  This article is a great explanation for what is happening with the Legal Aid lawyers. It covers a lot of information, but keeps the context light enough so that anyone could read the article. •  Law professor Michael Trebilcock’s Report of the Legal Aid Review 2008--historical overview of the program •  The Criminal Lawyers Association
•  This article is a personal favourite because it has information from past years •  In Section 6 of the Report, he describes what he considers to be the four “most compelling normative justifications” for legal aid: •  R. v. Askov--an important precedent regarding trials within a "reasonable" time.
•  This article explains everything that’s happening with the boycott and also has comments from readers. •  CanLII's "Canadian Charter of Rights Decisions Digest" is a good source of case law on Charter issues! •  The Dugald Christie case
•  An excellent page about how to go about conducting legal research •  R. v. Oakes •  Auton case--OJEN also has a good resource document on this on their webpage.
•  EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LEGAL CITATION FORMAT BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK •  Former Ontario Chief Justice Roy McMurtry speaks about access to justice issues •  Beverley McLaughlin's speech--read the part on "access to justice"
•  A police officer who killed his mistress wants legal aid? •  Ombudsman invesigation into the case about the police officer who abused legal aid funding. •  Forget the windup and make the pitch--how to write a good factum.
