Homework
Spelling: Each Monday we will have a pre-test to determine the students
that already know how to spell the words for the week. Students who receive
three wrong or less on this test will be a part of our spelling challenge.
They will be given additional words to learn. On Friday we will have a final
spelling test. Additional spelling homework from the Scholastic textbook will
be assigned on Friday and will be due the following Wednesday. Please spread
out the work over the days so that your child is limited to 15-20 minutes
of homework a night.
Reading: Students should read for at least 10 - 15 minutes each night. The
Reading Star incentive program logs the books they
read. They receive a reading star for every 25 books read. They also get a
bonus star for completing the genre wheel. Please refer to your
son/daughter's reading log for more information.
Books: Students have access to the school library for borrowing books. The
Newmarket Public Library is another excellent source for books. To assist
your child in making a good book choice for their reading at home, please
remember the five finger rule. Listen to your child read a typical page
from the book. Put up a finger every time your child makes an error. If you
have put up less than five fingers by the time you reach the end of the page,
then it is likely the book that they are reading is a good choice for
independent reading. If you find you have put up between five and ten
fingers, then the text might be O.K. if you are willing to listen to them
read and help them out with the errors. If you run out of fingers before the
end of the page,then the text is too difficult and your child will likely
become frustrated with the reading experience.
Math: Math homework will usually be handed out on Friday and due back the
following Thursday. Our speed tests will be completed on line and at school
using the "Math Magician" website. Feel free to have your child practice at
home using the website. The website can be found on my "Links" page.
Writing: A writing assignment will be handed out on Friday and will be due
back the following Friday.
A regular routine for completing homework is highly recommended.
