Grade Twelve Academic English

Friday, January 27 - Good morning.  If you haven't heard yet...the buses are cancelled today due to the freezing rain.  This means that all exams will be postponed by ONE day.  For my classes, we are now following the schedule below:
English 4U1-03- your exam is now on Thursday, February 2 at 8:30 AM in room 207
Please make sure that you bring any outstanding texts that you have not returned for the course.
I will post marks on our course web site later today (once I make it to the school).  This mark will be your 70 % term mark.  The remaining 30 % (seminar and exam) will be added in after the exam has been written.
Please feel free to stop by and see me if you would like any extra help.  I would also like a chance to review your literary essay and hand back some of your assignments.  The comments on the essay will be very helpful to you in helping prepare for the essay exam.  I am available after my 4C exam on Monday in my office between 206 and 207.  Send me an e-mail and we can easily set up a time to meet.
Enjoy your snow day and let me know if  you have any questions.
Ms. Waller
Thursday, January 26 - Today we are meeting in 207.  This is Part One of your exam (outline and note making preparations).  You may use your novel and any notes that you made during the seminars.  I will be checking your notes as well.  All materials will be left with Ms. Waller.  You are not allowed to make any edits to your outline or notes within google docs.  Feel free to come and see me at any point before our final exam on Wednesday, February 1.  Again - we will be in 207 and starting at 8:30 a.m. You are welcome to come in a little earlier for some breakfast/coffee.  Seminar marks will be available on Monday.

Make sure that you add a few comments to the document I have shared with you regarding how technology is used within our classroom and at the West.  It has been shared with you via google docs.

Friday, January 20 - Meet in 309.  We will then be moving to the library for our last book club meeting.   On Monday we will meet in the class and spend some time talking about the novel and prepping for the final exam.  Bring any questions you have about the novel with you to class.  Today is your final class to meet/discuss your seminar with your group members. You will not have any class time for this on Monday.

Thursday, January 19 - Continue working on your seminars.  I am at a meeting, but I should return before the second half of the period.  Once you have finished your seminars, you can use any additional time for essay prep/book club.

Wednesday, January 18 - Book club meetings - room 207.  Please see the video posted by Mr. Broomfield on Edmodo and write a quick response/share your ideas.  Tomorrow - seminar prep - meet in 207.

Tuesday, January 17 - Today is not a full fledged snow day at the West.  Some of the buses were delayed or cancelled, but not all.  I will see how many students are in our 4U class today before I make a decision about whether we will have the book club today, or reschedule for tomorrow. This also applies to the Visual Display group.  Please check the course web site  http://teacherweb.com/ON/CobourgDistrictCollegiateInstituteWest/MsWaller/apt2.aspx at 1:30 p.m. and I will post some instructions then. The roads are not great, so I would prefer to know that all of you are safe. If you are not in class today, please use the time productively to work on your book club and work on your seminars.

Ms. Waller

We voted as a class - 3/4 are here - students that are here are working on their seminars.  Book club is rescheduled for tomorrow's class.  We will meet in 309 where the last visual display group will present.  We will then be moving to 207 for the book club meeting.

Monday, January 16 - Slight change for today - please meet in 207.  You will be working on your seminars and preparing for your book club meeting.  See changes on 4U calendar in google docs. I will not be doing mark updates until tomorrow.

Friday, January 13 - Seminars - expectations and group formation.  Book Club - Chapter Three.  You may meet face to face and/or online via Edmodo.  I will post updated marks to the web site on Monday.  We will also spend time during Monday's class reviewing your term marks and assignments.

Thursday, January 12 - Happy snow day!  The school is open today and I am here if you need to see me. :)  Use today to make sure you are caught up with any work assigned this week.  You should also prepare for your book club meeting for tomorrow.  We will meet in 309 so that I can assign your seminar topics.  We will then be in the library for our book club meeting.  I am cancelling the film analysis.  See the changes I made on the calendar that I distributed to you in Google Docs.  Give some thought as to who you would like to work with on the seminar.  You are marked individually and this is worth 15 % of your final evaluation.  There are five members in each seminar group.  Ideally the seminar would be done by your book club group, but I will give you the option of making the choice as to who you want to work with.

Wednesday, January 11 (Ms. Waller will return tomorrow - our calendar dates remain the same)

1. Finish any discussion items that did not get completed in the book club groups yesterday.
2. Please make sure that the assignment questions from Edmodo (from yesterday) are submitted either via Google Docs or Edmodo (you can have some extra time to finish as I was told there was not enough time yesterday - task is listed below):
Either on your own, or with a partner, generate a list of questions AND answers for The Wars from the beginning of the novel to the end of Chapter Two. Your goal is TEN questions and answers (Jeopardy format). You must have at least ONE question in each of these six categories: 1. characters 2. themes 3. social issues 4. history/setting 5. symbolism 6. conflicts. **students do not have access to a computer today so they can also write and hand in or use their own computer
3. Complete the questions below. **these questions are due for tomorrow’s class

English 4U1-03 - The Wars - Chapter Two Questions
Instructions: You may complete these questions individually, with a partner, or within your book club groups.  I have shared the questions via google docs if you have your own computer with you today in class.  Use specific examples from the novel to support your responses.
Due tomorrow.
1.  What is the effect on the reader of the description of the war zone?
2.  What is the irony in the "asylum for the mad"?
3.  What is significant of "the rider behind them with four horses"?
4.  What kind of leader is Robert? Explain.
5.  Why are the crows following the men?
6.  What is the contrast in Devlin, Bonnycastle, Robert and Levitt's "treasures"?
7. How does Findlay develop the characters of Rodwell, Levitt, Devlin and Robert in this chapter?
8.  Why has Findley shifted times again, to earlier in the war at Robert and Harris' arrival in England?  Again there is a time shift, with Barbara's sister Juliet, in present times, telling the story.  Why?
9. What are your impressions of Barbara?  Explain.
Tuesday, January 10 - Read my instructions carefully BEFORE starting today:
1. Groups today have the option of either a face to face meeting, Edmodo online meeting or a combination of both.  The chairperson for the group will make the final decision. *the conference room is available for one group to meet in - see Mrs. Darling and she will allow a group to work in there
2. There are extra copies of the log sheets on the handouts section of the course web site and as a shared document in "Google Docs".  The chairperson should complete this form during the meeting and attach the notes of the group members.  If you are completing your discussion in Edmodo, make sure notes/files are uploaded and shared to the site. I have the file folders, so please hand in your log sheets with any notes to the supply teacher (ask him/her to leave them in my mailbox) If your group has the discussion completely on Edmodo, you should still fill in a log sheet, but I will assume that your group members have posted their work within the Edmodo discussion groups.
3. The meetings today should be approximately 45 minutes (minimum with the amount of material there to discuss) - you should also touch on some of the events within the plot for the first part of chapter two.  I am looking for evidence of insightful discussion and individual contributions.  Use page references and examples to support your ideas.
4. Once finished, complete the “assignment” on Edmodo for today for chapter two - this can be done either with a partner or individually - but all work is due by the end of the period.

Monday, January 9 - Welcome back!!  Today will be the snow day that you wished had happened, but didn't.  What does this mean?  Use the time to prep and catch up for tomorrow's book club meeting (see notes below for the last week of December).  I have also created and shared with you a calendar in Google Docs.  This contains EVERYTHING that we are doing for each day remaining in the course.  Use it.

Monday, December 19 - Friday, December 23 - Independent Novel - oral presentations.  We have three to four presentations each day this week.  The exception is Friday - one presentation followed by a pizza buffet before the Christmas assembly. Stay caught up on your reading over the break.  Book Clubs - Chapter Two - 1 - 7 - this was originally scheduled for December 22 - we will skip this book club and deal with the material together as a class once we return from the break.  Your next book club meeting is Tuesday, January 10 -
Chapter Two - 8 - 13.  During this meeting you will discuss any issues/questions for sections 8 to 13, but also any other issues from the early part of chapter two.  This meeting will be a combination on line (Edmodo) and face to face discussion. There are copies of the Book Club roles/dates in the "Library" section of Edmodo.

Friday, December 16 - Amanda's presentation.  Book club meetings - amazing discussion posts on Edmodo for your meetings.  If you were absent today you are expected to go onto Edmodo and contribute to the discussions posted within your groups for the book club meeting.  Make sure that you are working on your culminating tasks for "Hamlet".  Your dates are posted in the shared google doc calendar.  There is now a "buy out" for period four on Tuesday for the hockey game.  I am willing to reschedule presentations that day to Friday of next week OR to Tuesday at lunch.  The talent show has now been scheduled for Friday morning instead of Friday afternoon.

Thursday, December 15 - Guest speaker - Mr. Robins - responding to your questions about the setting of The Wars and the questions posted on Google Docs. Book club meeting (to be continued via Edmodo for tomorrow's class) and Alex L.'s presentation.

Wednesday, December 14 - Presentations - Shawn and Ryan T. (Alex will be presenting tomorrow before our book club meetings) - Homework - Check your Google Docs account a) add your due date for the "Hamlet" culminating task (the same date you posted on Edmodo to the Calendar b) Post 1 - 2 questions about the novel The Wars - these questions should relate to the historical time period as Mr. Robins has agreed to come in and do a question and answer session with you.  This will be very helpful in helping to understand both the characters and the plot of the novel.  Tomorrow - Book club meeting - this is evaluated, so make sure you have your notes and book with you in class.  All lists of roles are posted within your groups on Edmodo.

Tuesday, December 13 -
Today - this is your last lab period to work on your "Hamlet" Culminating Evaluations.  Stay on task and make good use of your time.  Also, please go to Edmodo and make sure that you have posted the name of your group for the book club discussions and your reading schedule.  Also, give some serious thought to having all group members sign up for a Twitter account.  If you choose this as an option, your group will conduct your book club discussions using Twitter, Edmodo and face to face...it will be very cool AND the amount of written material you will need to bring to book club meetings will be minimal! We will also use this for some of our full class discussions, so it is to your benefit to have an account.  I have posted a number of links on setting up your account and how to use Twitter on Edmodo.  You can also refer to the screen captures that I posted to Edmodo at the beginning of last week (scroll down on your Edmodo page). The videos do not take long to view, and you will be an expert in a little over ten minutes.  You will also find that many college/university instructors will use this technology as well. And Jessica P - you have not been forgotten - you will do your poem tomorrow before the oral presentations start.

Monday, December 12 -
Independent choice novel presentations - Cassandra, Michelle, Rachel and Ryan - a great start. *tomorrow we will be meeting in lab 207

Friday, December 9 - Before starting anything else - check the updated Oral Presentation schedule posted on Edmodo AND see my note re. the book club meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 22.

Today in the lab, you are to work on the following: a) Oral presentations b) "Hamlet" culminating evaluations c) Book club prep for your first meeting next week. **make sure each group member knows his/her roles for all of the scheduled meetings with the exception of December 22.

Book Club Groups:

Group One: Morgan, Emma, Alex L, Alec K, Jessika S (The Amigos)

Group Two: Jessica M, Paige, Jessica P., Julie, Ryan W (Four Girls and a Bald)

Thursday, December 8 -  All of today's work is posted on the Prezi link in Edmodo.  If you were absent, read all of the information carefully.  We also met with our book club groups and assigned roles for the first official meeting next week (check your handouts carefully for the roles and evaluations) - the handouts were shared with you last week in Google Docs and in the library section of Edmodo. Tomorrow - please meet promptly at the start of period four in room 207

Wednesday, December 7 -
Students are to work on the following tasks in class today:

Did you vote for how I am forming the Book Club groups on Edmodo?  The poll is still available - I will be decided on this tonight based on your feedback.
1. Oral presentations for your Independent Choice novel.
2. “Hamlet” - culminating evaluations - you need to make sure you have sent me your due date and that you are making these assignments truly amazing.
3. The Wars - Chapter One - Prologue 1 - 14 - reading - make sure that you have completed the required reading and made some notes on this section. You can also read ahead if this has been completed. *there will be a quiz on this tomorrow

You are allowed to use your personal computers and there are also five netbooks that can be signed out in the library through Mrs. Darling.  A maximum of three students may also work in Academic Support if they need computer access.  No one is to work in the library or in any other location.
**I am at PLC meeting (online), so I am in the school (office between 206 and 207) if you need me.
*some of you were not working as well as you could have yesterday...there should be a 100 % improvement on this today, if not there will be no further in class time to work on the presentations or on your Hamlet (said in an irritated and firm voice by Ms. W)
Tuesday, December 6 - **students have been told to meet in computer lab 207

The Wars - Chapter One - Prologue 1 - 14 - reading - make sure they have completed the required reading and made some notes on this section. *Jesse will need to get a copy of The Wars from the back of the shelf in 309. The students are well aware of what is required of them during this period. If anyone is not using the time responsibly, please let me know. All of the work is posted on the class web site and on Edmodo. They knew I would be away today and what was expected during today's class.
