A scene in which the character speaks alone expressing his/her true feelings and thoughts. Its dramatic purpose is to provide insight into the character and give voice to the voiceless (that which has been kept silent and needs to expressed).
You will give a presentation to the class as one of the characters in your novel. Begin by introducing the novel and the author and then become your character.
First, retell the story from the character’s perspective (if you pick someone other than the main character, you may find the story looks different from your eyes then it does to the main character. After all, the ‘bad guy’ might not see himself as being so bad!). Next, discuss your characters interests, friends, family, pets, where they live, what they do, etc... And how these things affect your character and the decisions they make in the story (give examples from your book to support your ideas). Finally, explain some of the problems your character faces in the story and how they are resolved (is your character happy with how things turned out? Explain.)
Be sure to present in first person narrative. In other words, you will be in role acting and talking like you are actually the character you’ve chosen. Bring in visual aids that may help you in your presentation and be sure to dress up like your character. Use descriptions from your book to help you come up with your costume.
Duration of the monologue should be approximately 2 minutes.
Due Dates:
You will need to complete Character Background Questions sheet by Tuesday, January 31st.
Your script is due Tuesday, Feb 14th.
Presentation will take place on Tuesday, Feb 28th (they will continue as needed after that).
