School website - http://www.drgjmacgillivrayschool.org - Please refer to this often as important school notices, news, events, and information is posted regularly!
Welcome to October! Wow, it feels like yesterday that I said "Welcome to September"! What a great start to the school year! The class has demonstrated a great work ethic for the most part and I hope that we can only improve on what we have already accomplished!
First of all, a huge thank you to those who have so diligently returned all the forms in a timely manner I realize there was a huge number of them and it was great to have them back with so little chasing!
Several of the students have mentioned our year end trip. I am in the process of confirming a night to have a parent information night with our company, Perspectives. As soon as that is confirmed I will post it on the website so everyone can plan to attend.
One issue that I have to highlight though is the Detention Room. As of now, if a student fails to hand in an assignment by 3:40 on the day that it is due they will be expected to stay after school to complete it. I realize that this could cause an issue with commitments after school but as always, I feel that school is the most important. The calendar has been updated to reflect all due dates so the students should be able to successfully manage all of their commitments by utilizing their agendas appropriately.
As for curriculum, we will be focusing on the following:
Curriculum Corner...
Language:
We are continuing with our Unit on Suspense in October. We will also be starting our Balanced Literacy Centers which will include: Independent reading, Computer activities, Guided Reading, Shared Reading, Integrated subjects, and Creative Journal writing .
In October we will be writing our Suspense scripts, and producing our own mini movies!
Literature Circles:
We will be starting these shortly so please touch base with your child to see what we are up to!
Ask your child about what makes a thought provoking question in Literature circles!
Math:
Both Grades have recently completed our first Unit on Number Sense and Numeration. We have just begun our next Unit on Measurement.
Grade 7’s are investigating the area of a variety of shapes (squares, triangles, etc.)
Grade 8’s are investigating the area and circumference of circles.
Both Grades are learning new mathematical formulas!
Science
Grade 8's will be completing a project on the Human Systems during the first full week of October while the Grade 7's will be starting to really focus on hands on activities to further explore Ecosystems and the Environment.
History
Grade 7's are going to continue to examine the development of the Fur Trade and New France while the Grade 8's will be focusing on how Canada became a country.
Geography
Grade 8's will be continuing to study Human Population and the Grade 7's will be looking at Geographic Themes.
Phys. Ed
We are finishing up Ultimate Frisbee and will be moving to Flag Football, Fitness Testing, and Soccer. As well, we will be studying Healthy Eating in Health class. We will be evaluating several eating habits and examining movies to help us do that.
As always, should you have any questions or concerns please do not hestitate to contact me at 905-436-2054.
Sincerely
J. Keller
