Calendar Routine

~CALENDAR ROUTINE-Room 101~

When the students hear our song of the week playing, they put their things away and come to the carpet. As the

students settle on the carpet, they follow the words of the song on chart paper.

1) Morning Message: Shared Reading & Problem of the Day

During this component of calendar time, the students learn how to use two different scripts to deal with

classroom problems and problems in the schoolyard.  Dex (our classroom puppet) delivers this message. 

The template for the message is:

 

Yesterday in class Dex saw  (name a problem).  How could they have solved this problem peacefully                      

or

 

Yesterday in the schoolyard, Dex (name a problem).  How could they have solved this problem peacefully?

 

Once we have read the message, I choose two students to come up in front of the class to model how to solve

this problem peacefully.  When they are done, the whole class gives them a “silent applause” for being role

model peacekeepers.

If someone is bothering you, look them directly in the eyes and say:

“I don’t like it when you _______________

I feel _______________________

I want ______________________”

If someone says this to you, look them in the eyes and say:

“I heard you say you don’t like it when _________________

I want ____________________

I am sorry.”

The Playground Script for Dealing with a Bully

When a bully is bothering you:

1)                              Look them in the eye

2)                              Stand cool

3)                              Send a quick message: "Stop" or "Whatever"

4)                              Walk away

If the bully is still bothering you:

1)                              Do the steps again

2)                             Tell a teacher

Note:  Always tell a teacher if a bully hurts you physically.

 

*On Mondays for our morning message, we have our Happy Monday Messages.

3) a) Add the new number to the calendar

b) Students also identify the following:

Yesterday was__________, Today is__________, Tomorrow will be ______________

4) Write the Date: Long form, short form, numerically

ex: Monday, December 18th, 2009.

5) Place Value Chart: Show how many days we have been in school: Magnetized base ten units: 

On a ten frame in the ones spot.

 

After we have covered skip counting in class I ask, “How can we count to this number?”

You can count to a number by:

2 if it ends with 0, 2, 4, 6, 8,

5 if it ends with 0 or 5

10 if ends with 0

6) Letter of the Week:

Here I model the upper case and lower case version of the letter of the week. We also work on phonics during this step.

7) Tally Chart:  Have the students add a line for every day we have been in school.  We play the Tally Song by

Ron Brown here.  For the first month I play the whole song, then we start to only play the full song every time

we reach a new group of 5.  The other days we sing the first verse only.

8) Weather Graph-put a sticker in the appropriate column. We sing the song:

What is the weather, the weather, the weather? What is the weather, the weather today?

Depending on the students' response we sing:

Today the sun (or clouds or snow) is in the sky and sunny is the weather! S-U-N-N-Y, S-U-N-N-Y, S-U-N-N-Y,

And sunny is the weather!

9) Math Song: This song reinforces the concepts we are working on in our current math unit.

For Example: This week for the next two weeks we are singing: "Quadrilaterals" and "Polygons."

10) a) What Temperature is it? One child to sets the thermometer to the temperature of the day.

b) What Time is it? A time is represented on the plastic clock & the students identify the time. They

jump once for each hour and clap their hands together once and shout the hour to the minute.

11) Money: Show how many days we have been in school using large Canadian coin cutouts. We write the

amount in two different ways.

12) Math Question: The students formulate a math question based on the number of days we have been

in school. We use the base ten units and the 100s board to do this.

13) Poem of the Day: Read it once-ask them to get a mental picture in their head/think about what they

see when I read the poem. The students also make text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world connections here.

Then I read it once more and show them the illustration.
