Dear Parents,
Did you know that the latest research demonstrates that children who are held and cuddled by parents
during story reading time become measurably better readers? Daily reading at home is important for
your child's reading development. Every minute your child spends with a book brings them closer to
becoming a fluent reader.
Borrow-a-book!
This year in our reading log program, your child will have the opportunity to bring home a leveled book
from our classroom library to read at home each night. They will also be using these books in the
classroom. For this reason, please ensure your child brings their reading log bag to school every day.
Reading Log
Your child will be keeping a reading log of all books read at home. This includes books they have read
to you as well as books that you have read to them. For every fifteen-minute block of reading you and
your child can make a new entry in their reading log. This entry includes writing the date, the title and
the number of pages that have been read.
Weekly Homework Assignment
It is encouraged that your child records 3-5 reading log entries per week. I will be checking each
student’s reading log every Friday to monitor the number of entries they have made.
Reading Chart!
Your child will also be bringing home a reading chart. For every reading log entry your child can place a
star sticker in one of the chart’s squares. When all the squares are filled with stars, they can place it in
the Special Reading Mailbox in our classroom. When this box is filled with 25 Reading Charts, our class
will start planning our very first Reader’s Café!
Please Note
I view family time as the most important and precious of pastimes, and that this must take precedence
over anything else. As well, sleep comes before homework! If homework cannot be completed, please
just write me a little note in your child’s special blue folder.
Thank you for your support and cooperation with our reading log program.
Happy Reading!
