Math For Parents

Welcome to Intermediate Numeracy!

This page is designed just for you, the parent.  As I move from unit to unit, I will explain what we are doing and what I will be covering.  At times I will put in some fun web-sites to help you and your child with mathematical concepts and share ideas that will help reinforce the concepts taught in class.

Numeracy and mathematics instruction has changed significantly over the past several years, and now focuses largely on problem solving and real-life applications. Communication has also become a major focus in numeracy. While procedural and computational understanding remains important, students will also be asked to explain concepts, formulas, procedures using words, diagrams, and pictures as another method to demonstrate understanding. Being able to explain "WHY" a procedure or formula works, indicates a deeper, conceptual, understanding of mathematics.

Expectations For The Year:

1. Students come prepared to every class with their math kit: 2 pencils, an eraser, geometry kit (ruler, protractor, compass) and a standard calculator with square root and exponent functions. Ipods and phones will not be allowed as calculators.

2. Students use the extra help sessions (lunch recess) when experiencing difficulty with a mathematical concept

3. Homework will be practice work or unfinished work from class. It will often include an extension question, that requires students to apply their understanding in a new/changed context. I ask that students complete their homework to the BEST OF THEIR ABILITY.

If your child is having difficulty with their homework, I ask that you put your initials next to the problem questions.  This helps me when I check homework the next day (which I do 90% of the time).  If I see quite a few initials, this indicates to me that I need to take extra time taking up the question, reteach the concept, or help the individual student in the area of difficulty.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school.

Homework Help: Online

Starting this fall, all 600,000 English-language math students in Grades 7 to 10 have access to live, interactive online math help through the expansion of a pilot project funded by the Ministry of Education. Homework Help is free, real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers.

Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. EST for 20 hours a week of individualized confidential math tutoring. There are discussion rooms for each grade where students can join in and see what questions other students are asking, watch the tutors draw on the whiteboard – and ask their own question for on-the-spot help. Follow the link below to begin online math help! Students will require their OEN Number which can be found on last year's report card.
