DESCRIPTION:  Canada and World Issues

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE:  This course draws on geographic concepts, skills, methods and technologies to analyse significant issues facing Canadians as citizens in an interdependent world.  Students will examine the challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future through the study of a range of topics, including economic interdependence, geopolitical conflict, regional disparities in the ability to meet basic human needs, and protection of the planet's life-support systems.

This course leads to further study in the Social Sciences, or Canadian and World Studies.

MAJOR UNITS:

1.       Introduction

2.       Demography

3.       Economic

4.       Earth in Balance

5.       Conflict and Co-operation

6.       Quality of Life

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students will:

  • explain the complex nature of the earth's natural and human systems;
  • analyze the causes and effects of economic disparities around the world;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, economic, and political aspirations of selected groups and the effects of their actions on local, national, and global issues

 

 

EVALUATION

Achievement in this course will be based upon the following categories:

Ø      Knowledge/Understanding  (20-30%)

Ø      Thinking/Inquiry (20-30%)

Ø      Communication (20-30%)

Ø      Application (20-30%)

 

Evaluation Split:  è 70% of the grade will be based upon unit summative tasks throughout the course.  E.g., Unit assignments, tests (Required unit assignments include an essay, political cartoon analysis and biography assignment)

è 30% of the grade will be based upon the course culminating tasks.  E.g., Course culminating activity and final exam.
