HISTORY
The official decree to erect Our Lady of Fatima Parish was issued on November 15, 1956 by Bishop
Hubert Dignan, second bishop of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. The parish was given the name
of Our Lady of Fatima because of Father Raymond Farrell's (first pastor) special devotion to
Mary, and also because of the connection between Mary's promise of peace and the town being a
uranium mining community.
The original church was built in July, 1957. The church hall was added in July, 1959. It stood
from 1957 to 1970 on the former parking lot of the present property. The church, bell tower and
hall were built through the donations of the mining companies and by the very generous time and
labour given by the men of the parish. The total cost to build the church was $30,000 plus
$5,600 for the land.
The new and present church was opened and blessed in June, 1970 under the direction of Fr. H.
Jackman. The church was renovated in November, 1994 under the direction of Fr. C. Waszczylo,
and again in 2005 while Fr. K. Gauthier was pastor. The stained glass windows were designed by
Lillian Albert, a parishioner, and made by Jacquie Grummet, a local artist. The original bell
was returned to the parish by Ed Blahey, and a new bell tower was erected to house the bell.
The bell was rung at the 2005 Christmas mass by Fr. Les Silaj.
