Social Justice Racism & Culminating Projects

Racism Assignment - Grade 12 Religion
Due: Monday December 5th, 2011

There are many examples of racism, intolerance and exclusion throughout history, in Canada, and around the world. Each student is to research and write about one of the following issues:

Hate groups like KKK and Heritage Front;       The Slave Trade ;     Human Trafficking;     History of Native or Aboriginal People;    Black History ;  The Civil Rights Movement;    The Holocaust;   Genocide in Africa (the Rwandan Massacre, Sudan, etc.);    Discrimination against GLBT people;    Bullying;    History and the Oppression of Women;     White Privilege;     Illegal Immigrants;   The Refugee Issue;     Apartheid in South Africa;     Racism in the Media

Your paper must be typed and no less than 1000 words. It must include at least one page of research on the issue, one page dealing with the reasons why people hate or discriminate against others in this way, one page of narrative or story telling related to the issue, and one page of concluding remarks about what needs to happen to heal the wounds and move to a place where healing, tolerance and mutual acceptance are possible.

 1.        Include a 250 words research on your issue.

 2.         Include 250 words in about the causes of hate and division.

 3.         Include a 250 word story about the issue you chose – that highlights the reality and challenges.

Include a conclusion of 250 words in which you write a personal after word about how this issue touches you personally, perhaps explaining why it is important to you or how it intersects with your real lived experience, and where we go from here to create a better world

Culminating Assignment - Grade 12 Religion
Social Justice - “See, Judge, Act"
Due:         Wednesday January 11th, 2012

This semester we have been exploring the issues that shape our world, our culture, our communities, our future and our very selves.   It is time for you to represent what you see of this world in which we live, to do some thinking about what is going on, and to offer some practical solutions and responses. Since we are limited in our classroom setting, and can't take to the streets to put our ideas into practice in concrete ways, we will have to ask you to do your analysis and planning in a more representational or symbolic way; the hope being that after you graduate from the classroom you will apply the thinking, analysis and values of this time together and put into action in your own way, and in your own life, what you have learned, and will continue to learn, as you see, judge and act in this world.

Your Final Culminating Assignment is to focus on any one of the issues relating to our course of study and to create a short story in which the main character must go through a process of change and metamorphosis, where they see their world with new eyes, and through the process of gathering information and careful reflection are able to reach new insights and conclusions, which finally lead them to change their behavior and commit themselves to a new way of acting and living in the world.

This is culminating assignment of the course so it must be typed.

1.      Include a prologue of 200 words presenting the social justice issue that you are using as the theme for your story. This can include statistics and information, analysis and facts that are not necessarily included in the story. Its purpose is to introduce the audience to the complexity of the issue that will be represented in an artistic fashion.

2.      The short story must be 750 words in length. The main character must go through all of the three stages of growth and transformation listed above. (see, judge, act)

3.      Include a Conclusion of 200 words in which you write a personal after word about how this issue touches you personally as the author, perhaps explaining why it is important to you or how it intersects with your real lived experience.
