"Homework" in kindergarten is meant to be fun, enjoyable activities that
parents can work through with their child to support the school program.
Throughout the year, your child will bring home a variety of homework
activities. Ideas to supplement the math program can be found online, while
literacy homework will be provided in your child’s folder. Please keep an eye
out for new homework.
Homework programs from school are provided based on student needs. As we get
to know your child, their homework program will change and grow with them.
Please be patient for the first month as we work to determine your child’s
needs.
Students may receive Jolly Phonics worksheets and reading journals.
Please see below for an overview of this homework:
Jolly Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a multi-sensory program that teaches letters and the sounds
they make using songs, actions and stories. Each day at school we may have
a “sound of the day,” a letter we will be learning and discussing.
Your child may be bringing home a duotang with homework to compliment the
sound of the day. Please help your child work through the activities. Please
remember: not only are you practicing writing skills, but also the
sounds/actions the letter makes!! For students who are just beginning to
print, please ensure that they are holding their pencil/crayon correctly and
encourage proper letter formation (see the inside of the Jolly Phonics
duotang).
Reading
Students in kindergarten should read, or be read to, on a daily basis.
Although your child may not be able to read the words in a book, reading the
pictures is a great way to tell a story and begin the reading process.
Talking about a story after reading is also very important. Please take the
time to read and discuss a variety of books with your child.
As your child’s reading ability develops, we will send home little readers
from school. We will work with your child and assess their reading abilities.
The books they will bringing home are books they can independently read with
few errors. This does not mean you don't have to read with them and help them
through some tricky words!! Reading should be a 2 person event!!
When reading with your child, please ensure that you are following the tips
on the laminated yellow card that comes home with the books. This is the same
format for reading we follow at school!!
As we progress through the year, please check your child's communication
folder for updated homework.
If, at any time, you find that your child is having difficulty, is bored with
the work or has hit the "homework wall", please DO NOT force the homework
provided. Continue to read with your child, have fun with letters and sounds,
but we do not want your child to become frustrated or upset with school work.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!
