Expectations for 5th Grade Writers
Good fifth grade writers:
Always spell no excuse words correctly
Contractions should always have the apostrophe in the correct place.
Words you see in a book or in the word (all you have to do is copy) should always be spelled correctly.
Names should always be spelled correctly and be capitalized.
Proper nouns are always capitalized.
Tough words should be spelled correctly on a final draft but may be misspelled on a rough draft.
All sentences are complete and have correct punctuation on the end.
All sentences start with a capital.
Paragraphs should always be correct.
Quotation marks should be used correctly most of the time.
Question and exclamation marks should be used correctly all of the time.
Colons and semi colons should be use correctly some of the time (and we should ask for help of look in a book to learn how to use them).
Comma’s should be used correctly all of the time.
Accent marks should only be used if we know how to use them.
