About The Teacher

Hello and welcome to the Rogue Science Program. Teaching Middle School
Science is my dream job. I have had an adventurous route to reaching this
goal. I am totally excited about my teaching career and I feel very
fortunate to be on this journey with such a skilled team of teachers, parents
and students.

In the fourth grade I decided to become a Marine Biologist. I actually
fulfilled this goal and enjoyed research in Oregon coastline studies and
training dolphins for the University of Hawaii. I left research when we
started our family. As my children started school I worked as a Special
Education Assistant. In 2000 I completed my Masters degree in Education at
SOU.

I believe in having fun in the classroom, yet also holding the kids to a
very high standard. In Science my goal is to try to get the students to
connect the subject with their real lives, and to get as physically involved
in the subject matter as possible. We will approach our studies with energy,
enthusiasm and curiosity.

I welcome sharing my love for science with the Rogue 7th and 8th grade
students.

Mission For The Class

Curriculum Objectives:

The goal of science is to explore and understand the world around us. This
is the first year that 7th grade students have had science as a "core."
Developmentally active involvement and hands-on learning still best serve
7th and 8th graders. Our aim is to increase scientific literacy. Curriculum
is spread over a two-year period and includes Life Science, Earth Science,
Physical Science. Core Standards of Structure and Function, Interaction and
Change, Science Inquiry, and Engineering Design are focused around a broad
range of scientific processes, concepts and skills. A strong emphasis on
scientific process, inquiry and engineering design will be repeated
throughout the broad curricular units.

I plan on using a variety of methods which will include: lab experiences,
problem solving, demonstrations, lectures, individual and group research
projects, guest speakers, films and field experiences. Parent involvement is
welcome at many levels and I am eager to integrate the wealth of resources
within the Rogue Community.

Grading Standards

I will be using the basic grading system as it is outlined in the student
handbook. The students' grade will be based on participation, projects,
homework, labs and tests/quizzes. Participation grades are determined by:
general attitude, participation, willingness to be a positive
member of the class, taking leadership roles, support of others,
preparation, following through on commitments, as well as improvement shown
over time.

I will assess and encourage learning by attention to insight, thinking and
improvement. This is the first year many of our students have had science as
a core along with language arts, mathematics, spanish, and social studies. I
focus on the process and excitement of learning.

Homework and Class Assignments:

There will be some homework. It will usually fall within two categories:
work not finished in class or larger projects such as Science Inquiry or
Engineerign Design carried out by students. Occasionally there may be some
other work that needs to be done out of class connected to one of our thematic
studies.

Looking forward to a great school year.
