Students who show mastery of material on the pretest or students who
need more challenging work may be offered the following options
depending on the unit of study.
Africa:
Students can create a political cartoon that highlights the role of
the king of Ghana in the trading between Taghaza and Wangara.
Political cartoons often use satire to make a point about a political
situation. Cartoons should have one to three illustrations. Each
illustration should have a voice bubble or a caption that explains
the
illustration and highlights how the king is using the situation to
his
advantage.
OR
Research more about the influence of Western African traditions of
American gospel, jazz, blue, rock-and-roll, and rap.
Islam:
Create a Venn diagram with three circles to compare and contrast the
three religious figures on the list: Muhammad, Jesus, and Buddha.
Students should identify at least two commonalitities for each of the
intersecting sections of the Venn diagram and at least two unique
pieces of information for each figure. They should brainstorm
various topics they could investigate to complete the diagram, such
as personal background, key teachings, and reaction of established
authorities to the figure.
Students can research statistics concerning the prevalence of each
religion in the modern world and the countries where each religion is
most predominanat. Make comparisons between the kinds of holy books
each religion uses, the origins of each religion, and the manner in
which followers of each religiion profess their faith.
Research one of the following:
Caliph al-Ma'mum, Ibn Sina, Al-Khwarizmi, Rhazes, Ziryab. Select one
that you would like to see chosen as having a major impact on the
modern world. Students should write the proposal in letter form to
the "selection committee," arguing their choice and giving at least
three examples of their choice's contributions.
