Teacher web will have an updated homework log and announcements. Please check
your students planner for a running log of work turned in and work not received.
Independent Study Options
Looking for ways to challenge your student? I have several ideas. If these
assignments interest your child, have them see me and we will get started. I
will allow class time for presentations and I will also allow students to work
on their independent assignments when they finish class work with time to spare.
1. Science Blog- every week select a new science topic to blog about. You can
pick famous people in science, new discoveries, current issues, astronomy. The
sky is the limit so just choose something that interests you.
2. Poster presentation- Create a poster about Newton’s Laws of Physics. You
can get materials and organizational ideas from your teacher. Go home, do some
research and prepare your speech. You will teach the class about Newton’s Laws
of Physics, you can even give examples.
3. Independent Research- choose a math or science topic of interest. Do
research, read a book and write a paper. You will come to class and present
your research. Instead of paper you could create a graphic novel explaining
your research, or create a power point.
Third Quarter: 2/6/12-4/11/12
Third Quarter has started and with that comes 5 more hours of community
service. This quarter and the other two following brings about the fifth grade
homework grades. Students in the fifth grade will receive homework grades
reflecting their ability to turn work in on time. The reasoning behind this
new addition is to help your fifth grader prepare for 6th grade. In middle
school your ability to turn in your work effects your grade. Make sure to get
work in on time and Parents, make sure to check your student's planner.
Community Service Requirement
The community service requirement begins in fifth grade and continues
schoolwide 5-8 grade. First quarter students are required to fulfill five
hours of community service. The process a student goes through to document
their community service was discussed in class. Students can come to me and
ask any questions concerning the process. This term community service is due
11/9/11. Students have five weeks to complete five hours.
Community service can be a variety of activities. Due to the age of a fifth
grade student the activities outside the home and neighborhood are limited. I
am willing to accept any activity that you think qualifies for community
service. Please ask your student about the requirement and feel free to email
me with any questions. cmcmkenzi@pps.net
