School Policies

2010-2011 Annunciation B.V.M. School Parent/Student Handbook

***The Annunciation B.V.M. School Parent/Student Handbook contains certain policies and procedures of our school. The school may change/revise any of its policies and procedures and apply them as circumstances dictate at any time. If you have a question about a particular policy or procedure, please contact Mrs. DeAngelo or Mrs. Lamberto.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICY - ANNUNCIATION B.V.M. SCHOOL strives to educate the whole child and every effort is made to enable each student to achieve success.  If a student receives a failing grade in an academic subject or a grade of Unsatisfactory in Conduct or Effort, he/she will be ineligible to participate in school/parish sponsored extra-curricular activities for the next academic trimester.  Teacher approval is required prior to a student resuming participation in an activity.

ATTENDANCE - Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for the development of personal responsibility and for continuous growth in the learning process.  Students are expected to be present on all school days, unless sickness or another serious reason makes attendance impossible.  When a student is absent, parents are requested to call the school office between 8am and 9am.  A note to the teacher which indicates the reason for the absence is due when a student returns to class.  Students are responsible to complete assignments missed due to absence. (Copies of forms to report an absence are in the Directory or simply use an index card). MAKE-UP WORK IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT RETURNS TO SCHOOL.

Perfect Attendance:  (Parish Elementary Policies and Procedures regarding Perfect Attendance Certificates #332) If Perfect Attendance Certificates are used their use must conform to the following guidelines:

                        1.  The student must be present and on time each instructional day. The school day begins at 8:10am with the.
bell ringing in the school yard. Students begin to line-up at 7:55am. After 8:10am a student is considered
late and will receive a late slip/or demerit. Students are to report to the school office when coming in late
                             before going to class.

                        2.  The student must present a note for any excused lateness. This is not to be a regular occurance.

                        3.  The student is excused for absence due to deaths in the immediate family.

The “immediate family” is defined as parent(s), grandparents, siblings, or member of the household.

4.  Lateness is recorded on River Valley Software

Other excused absences, unless otherwise directed from our office, do not warrant issuance of a Perfect Attendance Certificate.

BIKES - Students are not permitted to ride a bike to school.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS – In school, birthday treats must be healthy and nutritious.  Rather than an edible treat, if you would like to donate a book to the school library or classroom library in your child’s name you may do so.  Birthday invitations may only be given out at school if they are given to the entire class or all the boys and all the girls.

BOOKS - Textbooks are very expensive.  They must be covered and handled carefully.  Students may not write in any textbook.  No doodling in textbooks, workbooks, copybooks, or folders.  They must be carried in a book bag to and from school.  If a textbook is lost, mutilated, or destroyed, the student must assume the cost. Textbooks are to be covered with booksocks, and workbooks are to be covered in contact paper with name and grade visible.

BUDDIES - Each lower grade is matched with a an upper grade buddy for religious or class activities.

ABVM School Acceptable User Policy (AUP) for Internet Access

Internet access is now available to students and teachers at our school. The Internet is an electronic highway connecting thousands of computers all over the world and millions of individual subscribers. While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access objectionable materials as well. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information, resources and opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages.

To that end, Annunciation B.V.M. School has set the following standards for using

            on-line information sources.

            1. Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks, just

as they are in the classroom. Communications on the network are often public in nature. The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to network services is given to students who agree to act in a responsible manner. Parent permission is required and access is a privilege -- not a right.

2. The principal and supervising teachers will determine what is appropriate and their decision is final. Before using the Internet, each student will review the Acceptable User Policy (AUP), learn about proper use of the network and become familiar with Internet etiquette.

3. Network etiquette (Netiquette) is important while users are on-line. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • For reasons of personal safety, students will NEVER post personal contact information about themselves or others. This may include address, telephone numbers, school address, etc.
  • Note that electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private. People who operate the system do have access to all mail. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities may be reported to the authorities.
  •  *Do not write or send abusive messages to each other. Cyber bullying will result in automatic school suspension.
  • Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language.
  • Do not use the network in such a way that you would disrupt the use of the network by others (e.g., downloading huge files during prime time; sending mass e-mail messages; annoying others using talk or write functions).
  • Respect appropriate laws and copyrights governing the information on the Internet. Transferring copyrighted material without express permission of the owner is a violation of Federal Law. The user is deemed responsible to see that this does not occur.
  • Plagiarism is taking the ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were one’s own.  Students will not plagiarize works they find on the Internet.
  • No vandalism. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, the data of the Internet, or the data of other networks that are connected to the Internet backbone. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.

             4. The principal and supervising teachers may review files and communications to maintain system integrity
and ensure  that users are employing the system responsibly.
Network storage areas may be monitored regularly. Users should not expect that files
stored on school servers will always be private.

            5. Annunciation B.V.M. School reserves the right to amend this policy.

These policies apply to ALL users, students, teachers, and administrators of

telecommunications systems which are entered via equipment and access lines located at

Annunciation B.V.M. School or who obtain privileges through association with this school.

Violations may result in loss of access as well as other disciplinary action.

CURRICULUM - Students follow the curricula prescribed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Office of Catholic Education. Teachers make every effort to meet the individual needs of students through challenging and enriching projects, and by adapting and/or modifying the curriculum when this will enable a child to achieve success.

A variety of assessment strategies are implemented within each marking period. This includes formal and informal evaluation of student performance. At least five assessments will occur within a marking period for each major subject area.

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 participate in art, computer, library, music and physical education classes each week. A variety of additional programs contribute to and enrich the standard curricula: Art Goes to School, Forensics, Instrumental Music, MATHCOUNTS, R.E.A.C.H., Reading Olympics, Science Fair, Spring Show, and Variety Show are among them.

DISCIPLINE CODE - We believe that discipline is fundamental to life.  Discipline is a necessary reflection of the philosophy of the Catholic School, which attempts to develop a fully committed Christian – a Christian committed to the observance of just rules and regulations which will assist the individual in responding to his/her responsibilities and obligations to him/herself and others.

Correct training in discipline means that a child learns to accept rules and regulations presented by lawful authority.  Students are expected to act in such fashion that their behavior will reflect favorably on themselves and the school.  They are expected to show consideration and respect for their fellow students and teachers, thus creating a harmonious atmosphere within the school.  All students must recognize their individual responsibilities and obligations and discharge them in accordance with school regulations.  Children who fail to comply with school policies and regulations must accept the consequences.  Detention and loss of privileges are possible consequences.

Disciplinary Procedure for PRE-K, Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3 usually will be handled by the classroom teacher, the principal, or other members of the faculty.

Disciplinary Procedure for Grades 4 to 8

Students in grades 4 to 8 who demonstrate unacceptable behavior will receive a demerit, which is signed by the principal, teacher and parent.  After having received one demerit, the next offense will result in an after school detention.  A student who serves two detentions during a marking period for unacceptable behavior may receive an in-school suspension depending on the offense. The conduct grade for that marking period will be a 2 or a 1.

The following is only a guideline for the classroom teacher in the issuance of demerits or an automatic detention.  It is not an all-inclusive list of conduct that violates the Discipline Code. An automatic detention may be issued immediately. Any member of the faculty may issue a demerit/or an automatic detention to students in any grade if warranted.

The following infractions will warrant at least one (1) demerit per infraction.

·         Not prepared for class - Not having schoolwork, supplies, books, etc.

·         Improper behavior - Includes, but not limited to disturbances in class/playground/lunchroom (i.e. note passing, loud boisterous sounds, throwing food), any disruption deemed by the principal or classroom teacher to interrupt the educational process.

·         Disrespect - Any improper attitude displayed toward any teacher, administrator, staff member, volunteer parent,  or fellow student.

·         Gum chewing.

·         Eating in class.

·         Dress code violation.

·         Failure to return a signed demerit slip within two (2) days.

·         Other- Any behavior that warrants attention not specified on the above list.

A student may be denied participation in CYO and/or school-related activities if there has been a serious violation of discipline or failure in an academic subject.  Appropriate notification will be given to the parents and students.

An automatic detention or in-school or out-of-school suspension may occur for serious school violations, which includes:

  • Lying
  • Cheating - The taking or giving of school work that is not one's own or if the teacher has probable cause to suspect such action
  • Any verbal or physical bullying, exclusion of students, fighting, threatening, harassing or violent acts
  • Cyber-bullying
  • Blatant disrespect displayed toward administration, faculty, staff member, parents, volunteers, or  another student
  • Forgery - Any school paper or handing in any paper signed by anyone other than a parent or guardian or handing in a paper written by someone else
  • Leaving school premises without permission
  • Invading or damaging teacher, student, any other school or parish property
  • Smoking in or around school property
  • Use of alcohol or drugs etc.
  • Profane/abusive/obscene language or gestures or engaging in immoral conduct
  • Bomb scare or triggering other false alarms

  • Cell Phones
  • Cutting Class
  • Truancy
** "I/We was/were just kidding."  "I/We was/were just fooling around."  "I /We didn't mean it." are not defenses. Please be mindful of respectful behavior toward everyone!

*A student who receives a suspension may be dismissed from the school community depending on the offense. The Pastor and Principal are the final recourse in all disciplinary situations.

The Code of Behavior for Annunciation students is constantly reviewed Students are told and parents are informed via The Message from the Principal of revisions and updates.

The principal and or teacher reserves the right to refuse a student or class permission to attend a field trip if conduct is not appropriate.

No drinking of alcoholic beverages by chaperones is permitted on any school field trip. All field trip chaperones must have updated clearances: Pennsylvania State Police Background Check (every five years), Child Abuse Clearance (every five years), Safe Enivonment Workshop (one time only).

*Chaperones may not bring younger siblings/children on a class field trip.
