What is Happening in The Classes
Fifth Level Class:
The students are working with division. Prior to Thanksgiving, students further developed their understanding of the meanings of division - sharing or grouping. They have been involved in different types of activities to help them learn the vocabulary of division. As the month of December progresses, working with and understanding the role of remainders and learning the procedure for long division will be the focus of the students' work in class and at home.
Second Level Class:
The students be engaged in activities that will help them understand and implement the last strategy for the basic facts - Subtract From Ten, Add Extra. Students will learn how this strategy works using ten frames and chips and move to using the strategy in their brains, without the need for manipulatives or pictures. Activities that incorporate problem solving, identifying similarities and differences, and analyzing will help students solidify their understanding of strategies. An assessment will be given to determine students' effective use of strategies prior to the Winter Break.
Students will apply the properties worked with prior to Thanksgiving to help them simplify variable expressions and solve simple one-step equations. Students will be expected to use inverse operations as they solve equations even if the equation can be solved mentally. Learning how to use inverse operations to solve these simple equations will help students solve more complex equations after the Winter Break. A test will be given on Tuesday, December 17. It will cover all of the content of Chapter 2, including using manipulatives to solve equations.
