Apps for IPads, IPods, and Iphones

RECOMMENDED APPS

Some of the apps below are math oriented, others are not. All of the suggested
apps come highly recommended by a variety of organizations including the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association of Supervision
and Curriculum Development.

Cargo-Bot is a puzzle game where you teach a robot how to move
crates. Sounds simple, right? Try it out! There is no cost for this
engaging, challenging puzzle game.

Cargo-Bot

Flow Free is a simple yet addictive puzzle game. You need to
connect matching colors with pipe to create a flow. Pair all
colors, and cover the entire board to solve each puzzle. But watch
out, pipes will break if they cross or overlap! There is free
play through hundreds of levels, or you can race against the clock
in Time Trial mode. Gameplay ranges from simple and relaxed, to
challenging and frenetic, and everywhere in between. How you play
is up to you.
Flow Free

The cost for this app is $0.99 and is available for the IPhone,
IPod, and IPad. Students can choose to pick practicing basic
facts for addition, subtraction , multiplication or division.
Higher difficulty levels build mental math skills as well. The
game can be played with multiple players as well as one player.
Math Bingo

This version of "Math Doodles" introduces three challenges plus an
additional functional sneak peek challenge that will be made
available in it's finished form in a future free update. Each
Challenge provides plenty of mathematical practice, within a
recreational math setting. The mathematical puzzles allow users to
play, explore, and experiment with mathematical concepts, while
developing and strengthening their strategy and problem solving
skills. Math Doodles challenges are designed to allow for multiple
solutions and strategies. There isn't only one correct answer.
Math Doodles

Developed at the Stanford School of Education, Motion Math HD
follows a star that has fallen from space, and must bound back up,
up, up to its home in the stars. Moving fractions to their correct
place on the number line is the only way to return. Motion Math
gives learners a physical experience of the number line and an
intuitive feeling for fractions. Fractions are a notoriously
difficult area and if a learner never gains a gut sense for them,
it can impede progress in more advanced forms of math. One reason
fractions are tough is that they can be written in so many
different ways! Motion Math helps learners perceive and estimate
many representations -- numerator over denominator (1/2), percents
(50%), decimals (.5), and even pie charts. Cost: $2.99

Motion Math HD

Another outstanding app that is part of the Motion Math series,
this app engages children and adults in a game that builds an
intuitive way to visualize addition: as the bringing together of
two objects. Hungry Fish challenges players to find, for example,
the many different ways to create a sum of 7. The basic app is
free, but worth the cost of $8.99 to purchase all levels,
including the level that adds and subtracts negatives.
Motion Math: Hungry Fish

The prequel to Hungry Fish, this app is geared for 3 to 7 year olds.
This app is an interactive way for preschool and early elementary
children to build a strong concept of addition and to understand
what numbers represent. There are 15 total levels, starting with
combining dots to working with numerals. Cost: $2.99
Motion Math: Hungry Guppies

From the award-winning creators of Motion Math apps, this app is an
engaging, visual, fun way to estimate and compare multiplication
expressions! Multiplication is a tough concept for learners to
master - some memorize formulas or times tables, but never really
understand the concept. Motion Math: Wings shows multiplication in
six different visual forms: rows of dots, clusters of dots,
“groups of” dots, a grid, a labelled grid, and symbols. Seeing the
many different forms helps learners master the concept of
multiplication. Motion Math: Wings includes six visual
representations of multiplication problems with ten levels of
difficulty, from estimation of dots for pre-schoolers all the way
up to challenging levels for adults! The basic app is available
for free. Additional levels are available for a fee, but the best
price is $6.99 for all levels. This is well worth the cost.
Motion Math: Wings

A stetchable number line activity that helps students master the
number line while developling flexible mental computation,
numerical estimation, and quantitative judgement. The app is now
available for the IPad, IPhone, and the IPod Touch. There are 6
levels that can be played without a fee, but you can upgrade to
the full game for $3.99.
Motion Math Zoom

56 different math missions help students build skills in numbers,
fractions decimals, couting, times, basic facts and many more
areas. This app is available for both the IPad, IPhone, and the
IPod Touch. The cost is $0.99
Rocket Math

THE PUZZLE: Target designs are arranged on the screen in random
orientations. Use turns (rotations), flips (reflections), and
slides (translations) to move and match a figure over the target
images. A level is completed when all of the target designs have
been matched There are two modes of play, solve and race. Comes
highly recommended by Children's Technology Review.
