Course Objectives

Learning Goals:

Students will read nonfiction materials on the topic of survival and survival scenarios. This includes analysis and reflection of events that have been recorded biographically and by reporters.

Through their readings and activities, students will increase their ability to write effectively for a variety of purposes. Students will practice reading comprehension and learning strategies: Listening, Speaking, Critical Reading, Writing Purpose, Top Down Mapping, Summarizing, Note Taking, Questioning, and Research


Learning Targets:

Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using a variety of word solving skills including context clues and word analysis.

Identify, describe, interpret, and analyze literary elements and devices:

  • Identify and describe characters' features, relationships, and motives in text;
  • Identify an danalyze the setting (location and time) and its impact on plot, character, and theme in texts;
  • Identify the major problem(s) / conflict(s) within texts

  • The Jigsaw Strategy is an efficient way to learn the course material in a cooperative learning style. The jigsaw process encourages listening, engagement, and empathy by giving each member of the group an essential part to play in the academic activity.

    • R - Read the paragraph
      The first step requires the student to read the paragraph or section of the text.
    • A- Ask yourself what the paragraph is about
      Have the student determine the main idea of the paragraph and a few of the supporting details.
    • P- Paraphrase
      The student should put into his own words what the paragraph is about. He then can jot these words in the margin.

Marking Period 1: 30% / Marking Period 2: 30% / Marking Period 3: 30% / Final: 10%

Expectations for Student Performance: Participation is a must. Students need to bring materials to class, and not leave to go to lockers. All assignments must be completed on time. Missed work due to excused absence is to be made up within two days. Extenuating circumstances such as school closure or hospitalization of student are the exception. Students are responsible for working in assigned groups for some assignments. See attached Late Work Policy and Classroom Rules

Course Policies

Attendance: Students will only be able to make up work or tests if absences are designated "excused".

Late Assignments: See Late Work Policy
Make-up work due to absence:
Two days from the date of an excused absence. Five points per day will be deducted for assignments turned in later. Incompletes are assigned at the discretion of the teacher.

Homework: Unfinished class work, projects, reading, assigned projects, studying
Academic Dishonesty:
Zero point value assignment

I am available by appointment during my prep period (7th), or after school.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Format of Class: After an introduction to each unit, the teacher becomes a facilitator. Students work individually and collaboratively on assignments. Blackboard, other internet and media, and hands-on experience are all integral parts of the class experience.
