What is St. Peter Cathedral School's Preschool Program all about?
As a parish program, St. Peter Cathedral School Preschool will first and
foremost include experiences to create an awareness of God in the lives of
our young students. It is also our intention to create a readiness and love
for learning through experiences rather than to push formal instruction
during these early years.
Social Development: Our program creates a safe environment where the
children begin to learn how to share, take turns, and learn the concept of
fair play.
Language Development: Age-appropriate stories are read, and
individual time is provided for the children to look through books on their
own. Environmental print (print of everyday life, i.e., the symbols,
signs, numbers, and colors found in McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Exxon, Pizza Hut,
7-Up, and on websites, for instance) is utilized as it offers an excellent
entry point for young children to begin to learn to read, write, and do
math. Our Preschoolers’ self-confidence is encouraged through show-and-tell
participation, weekly theater involvement, and storyboard creation through
the loveable character, “Scat the Cat.”
Sensory Development: This is a hands-on area for creative
explorations. Your Preschooler will enjoy a variety of materials and toys
to stimulate his/her senses and promote imagination. Activities include
playing Shape Detective and Texture Detective.
Physical Development: The children are encouraged to run,
jump, climb, and balance with confidence. These skills are taught through
hockey games, river jumping, musical chairs, limbo dancing, and relay races,
which are part of the scheduled weekly gym classes, utilizing our outdoor
playground (weather permitting) and the Prep Gym, schedule permitting.
Skill Development: Our Preschoolers enjoy a variety of toys to
enhance their fine motor skills and cognitive development. A large open
area of the Preschool classroom is used for group games and other active
movement activities, as well as our outdoor playground. Another area of
skill development is the Computer Lab. Four PCs are provided for morning
computer time (15 minutes per child, per day) where the Preschoolers can
make their own choices regarding what computer games to play, as well as
learn patience and sharing by using allotted time slots for individual
computer time.
Project Development: Arts and crafts are done on a daily
basis, whether it’s making groundhog holes, mouse or whale hearts, 3-D paper
roller coasters, finger painting, storyboards, kaleidoscopes, or
butterflies. All Preschoolers are encouraged to use their imaginations in
creating their masterpieces, as well as fine tuning their motor skills by
using crayons, markers, and preschool scissors throughout each day.
St. Peter Cathedral School Preschool Program is located in the lower
level of St. Peter Cathedral Church. This location affords our program
numerous “extras” that aren’t available across the street at the “Big
School.” A few of these “extras” are: visiting different areas of the
Church, trick-or-treating throughout Cathedral Prep, having the Prep
students read to our Preschoolers, enjoying field trips to different areas
of Prep, i.e., the band room to make beautiful music, or the gym for
parachute fun. Since our classroom is located next to the Prep cafeteria,
delicious lunch items for purchase and special treats await the class
provided by “Mr. Frank” and his loving staff. Our Preschoolers do not wear
uniforms. There is no bus service provided – just tons of fun and love!

What are the days and hours for the 3-year-old Preschool Program?
The days and hours for our 3-year-old program are Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 8:00am-11:00am. Children are more than welcome to be dropped off
beginning at 7:30am. After-care is available for our 3-year-old Program and
is explained in Question 4.
--------------------------------------
What are the days and hours for the 4-year-old Preschool Program?
The days and hours for our 4-year-old program are Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays from 8:00am-11:00am for the morning only program and 8:00am-2:00pm
for our all-day program. Children are more than welcome to be dropped off
beginning at 7:30am. After-care is available for our all-day preschoolers
and is explained in Question 4.
--------------------------------------
Do you have an after-care program?
Yes, we do! Beginning in September, 2007, we are very excited about
offering an after-care program for both of our Preschool classes. For our 3-
year-old program, after-care is offered as follows: 11:00am-2:00pm ($9.00
per day, with a $25.00 yearly registration fee) or 11:00am-5:30pm ($18.00
per day, with a $25.00 yearly registration fee). For our 4/5-year-old
program, after-care is available from 2:00-5:30pm ($9.00 per day, with a
$25.00 yearly registration fee).
Our after-care program is really a structured extension of our Preschool
Program where the children will enjoy lunch (for the 3-year-old program), a
rest period, art, math, science, outdoor playtime in our private playground
or indoor playtime in the Prep Gym during inclement weather, snack time and
computer time.
--------------------------------------
What kind of lunch is offered for the children?
For the 3-year-olds who are participating in after-care or for the all-day 4-
year-olds, the children are more than welcome to pack a lunch
(microwave "heat-ups" are available). As our preschool is located right
next to the Prep Cafeteria, our preschoolers are able to purchase a Prep
lunch for $2.00 a day. This lunch includes milk and their choice of a
homemade soup, salad, sub sandwich, PB&J, PB or just J sandwiches, or Mr.
Frank's daily special, along with fresh fruit. If your child would just
prefer to buy milk, the milk price is $0.35 per day.
--------------------------------------
Does your program have any special or fun days?
Yes!! We have several special fun days planned for each month: Farm Day,
Halloween Parade, Pajama Day, Gingerbread House decorating with their
families, Pirate Day, Beach Day (with 500#+ of sand), and Royal Day, just to
name a few.
