5th Grade Artwork

Coat of Arms

Students continued their look at artwork from the Medieval era. Coat of arms were created in order to distinguish who was who on the battle field. They came to represent members in a family tree over generations of use. The study of a coat of arms family tree is called heraldry. Students designed their own coat of arms using traditional medieval elements and their own contemporary ideas. The only requirement for their design was that they were to divide their shield at least once.

Illuminated Letters

5th grade students learned about the origin of illuminated letters during medieval times. Instead of using precious stones and gold leaf, students used colored permanent markers and aluminum foil. They were instructed to create an illuminated letter using a design or images.
