Course Descriptions

CHEMISTRY I   - Semester  -   1.00 credit

Academic Chemistry is a physical science taught to students as a second lab 
course.  It is weighted heavily as a laboratory study.  The course is 
designed to prepare students who plan to major in science, engineering or 
health professions in college.  It also gives non-science majors a basic 
background in an applied science.  Topics include the Metric system, 
significant figures, Physical and Chemical properties, density, atomic 
structure, electron configuration, chemical reactions and stoichiometry.  

GRADES are calculated using a point system.  Each student's grade consists 
of the following:
2/3 (approximately)  =  tests and quizzes
1/3 (approximately)  =  lab reports, assignments, homework


ECOLOGY II  -  SEMESTER  -   1.00 CREDIT

In Ecology II students will develop a global perspective of environmental 
issues, and study the impact on the environment caused by a growing 
worldwide population and technological advances.  Topics include Integrated 
Pest Management, Biodiversity, Watersheds, Water Pollution, Air Pollution, 
Solid Waste Management, Energy Resouces, Radiation, and Overpopulation.

GRADES are calculated using a point system.  Each student's grade is 
composed of the following:

30% (approximately) - tests
30% (approximately) - projects/lab reports
30% (approximately) - homework/class assignments
10% (approximately) - field work/lab performance grade


INTRO TO MATTER AND ENERGY  -  SEMESTER - 1.0 CREDIT  (ACADEMIC)

This freshman science class concentrates on introductory concepts in 
chemistry and physics.  This is accomplished through lecture, research, 
current events, and laboratory activities.  Some topics include:  Metric 
system, density, speed and velocity, forces, work and power, energy, simple 
machines, heat and temperature, water resources, physical and chemical 
properties of matter, atomic structure, chemical reactions and the periodic 
table.  

GRADES are calculated on a total point system, with approximate weight given 
to each of the following:

50% - tests and projects
20% - lab reports and quizzes
20% - homework and class assignments
10% - lab performance grade
