THIS WEEK IN LANGUAGE ARTS......

Monday--Read 20 min. -- Today we began our new story, "I Could Do That!"  We introduced vocabulary, the reading skill Cause and Effect, and worked on building background.  Take some time to listen to the story online...Go to the Journeys link on our 4th grade website.  We also typed summaries from our last story at the computer and practiced spelling words.  In our novel, Titanic, Paddy and Alfie have discovered a mysterious scrapbook in the cargo hold of the ship, while our two cosmopolitan travelers find themselves at the same dining table.   Read chapter 14 for tomorrow!  Study spelling for Thursday!

Tuesday-- Read 20 min.  -- Field Day at the FHS track  --9-11:30

Wednesday--Read 20 min. -- Today we read and discussed our new story, "I Could Do That!"  This narrative is written about the true events of the first woman to hold public office in the USA, Esther Morris.  She was an advocate for women's right to vote and was proud that her home state of Wyoming was the first to pass a law allowing women to vote!  we also reviewed vocabulary, worked on typing our summaries, and practiced cause and effect identification.  In Titanic, our hero, Paddy, decides to make a quick escape in Ireland before the ship takes off accross the Atlantic, only to have his plans foiled by the villian, Gilhooley!  Read chapter 16  and practice spelling words for tomorrow!

Thursday--Read 20 min.--Today we reread our story and identified key cause and effect relationships. We also took the FINAL spelling test of the year!! In our novel, the four main characters of the story have connected as Titanic takes off across the Atlantic.  We are learning a lot of new vocabulary in addition to comparing cultural and time period differences.  In our Titanic packets, we are working on prefixes and figurative language.  Keep reading for your May goal.
