When and why are assignment notebooks checked?

Assignment notebooks are reviewed once per month on a random basis. They are
collected all at one time and graded that day. The assignment notebooks are
returned the same day. Assignment notebooks are graded because they are an
important part of the middle school concept. Children are becoming more
independent at this age and can begin handling their own requirements in
school. Keeping a calendar is a life skill that can begin in the teenage
years. Studies show that children who use an assignment notebook turn in
their homework, projects, etc. more often than children who do not use an
assignment notebook.

How many book goal projects must my child complete per marking period?

One project must be completed by each child per marking period. Even if a
child reads two or more books, only one project is to be done. The projects
involve art and require your child to analyze a book in terms of a literary
element (characters, plot, setting, mood, conflict, and theme) a little more
closely and in a creative way. Directions are distributed at the beginning
of the marking period, and the directions are also available in room 703 and
705. Rubric grading sheets for the projects are also shown to the students,
so that they know how their work will be graded before they even start their
project. Model projects are also shown, so that the students see a visual
example of what they will be doing.
