Tips for Parents

Great Tips for Busy Parents of Middle School Children to "Connect"
with their Kids

1. Use car time to have meaningful conversations. Turn off the radio. Kids will often talk to you more in the car, because they don't have to make eye contact.
2. Ask your middle schooler about what he or she would like to talk about. Be sure to be quiet and listen to what he or she has to say.
3. Be sure to make time every day to spend one on one time with your child. Write it on your calendar if you need to do so.
4. Remember the 80/20 rule. In the business world, it means 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort. Instead of doing things right, do the right things.
5. Volunteer to help with school activities after hours. See if there are activities and events you can attend and help out with after school.
6. Remember... five years from now, your middle schooler won't remember the night you left the dishes in the sink. He or she will remember the time you spent with him or her talking or doing an activity.
7. Exchange notes with your child. Kids can often write down what they cannot say out loud. Leave little notes around that say you are proud of something he or she did.
