Course Description:

This English class focuses on your development of reading comprehension, writing, speaking and listening skills based on standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  In this class, we will be reading literary works from the English, American and the Modern Age.  Writing skills will be enhanced to allow for the improvement of narrative, informational and persuasive writing and daily survival skills.  Students will also work on a research based paper utilizing the MLA format.  Basic grammar will be covered through out the school year in order to enhance the writing process. Students will also participate in vocabulary development through vocabulary from assigned readings. 

 

Novels:

Jonathan Swift’s, Gulliver’s Travels

Herman Melville’s, Moby Dick

Stephen Crane’s, Red Badge of Courage

 

Required Materials:

Students are expected to come to class each day prepared.

Required Daily

·        writing utensil

·        note book

·        folder ( provided by Mrs. Brown)

Grading:

All grades will be entered online using the Skyward System.  Your grades will be updated regularly.  Keep track of your own grades.

 

Your grades are based on averages.  You will be informed of homework and class assignments that will be graded along with tests and quizzes.  Students will also be given a weekly participation grade that includes attendance, participation in class activities and compliance with established classroom rules.

 

Extra Credit:

Extra credit will be available on an as needed basis.  Extra credit needs to be approved by Mrs. Brown.

 

Cheating:

Cheating is copying or giving answers to another student in class.  Please take care of yourself.  Anyone caught cheating; copying or giving answers will receive a zero for that graded work.
