Rules for Miss Hyder’s English Class
1. Make eye contact: If you are speaking to someone, keep your eyes on
that person. If someone is speaking, turn your head and look at that person.
2. If we are congratulating someone in the class, everyone must clap.
3. If you win or do well, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.
4. When coughing, sneezing, or burping, turn your head away from others
and cover your mouth/nose with your entire palm.
5. Do not show disrespect to anyone by rolling your eyes, making a face,
or any other rude gestures.
6. Always say “Thank you” when you are given something. If you do not
say “Thank you” within three seconds, I will take the item away from you and
the entire class.
7. If someone says “Thank you” to you, always say “You’re
welcome.” “Yep,” “Sure,” “Uh-huh” are not good enough.
8. We will keep a “Good Deeds” journal that I will check at the
beginning of the class. Each time you do a good deed for someone else
(picking up someone’s pencil, holding a door, helping your mom with the
cleaning), write it in your journal. I am looking for at least 3 good deeds
per entry.
9. If we grade one another’s papers and you alter a grade from what it
should be, you and your partner will both receive 0s. The only marks you are
allowed to make is an X on the number of the incorrect item, your name at the
bottom of the page, and the score at the top.
10. When reading together in class, you must follow along and be able to
pick up immediately if you are called upon.
11. Answer all written questions with a complete sentence. For example,
if you are asked the birth place of William Shakespeare, you would
reply, “William Shakespeare was born in England.”
12. You will be given rewards throughout the year. However, if you ask
for a reward, no one in the class will receive one.
13. You will come completely prepared for class each day, without
exception.
14. Do not make excuses. If you do not have something, simply state that
you do not have it. I will not except excuses for any reason. We must own
up to our mistakes.
15. Make every effort to be as organized as possible.
16. On the rare occasions that I assign homework, do not complain. This
will lead to a double assignment.
17. While with a substitute, you will follow the same rules as you do
with me.
18. Do not get out of your seat without permission, unless you are going
to be sick. Trash will be thrown away as you leave the classroom. Also, do
not leave when the bell rings; I will dismiss you.
19. Do not speak unless you raise your hand and are called upon, I ask
you a question and you respond, or it’s during group work.
20. You may have something to eat, as long as no one sees it and it is
not heard. IF there is any trash left behind, even once, this privilege will
be revoked.
21. If a student is being disciplined in the classroom, do not look at
that person, and do not speak.
22. When you are offered food, never take more than your fair share. It
is disrespectful to others.
23. If someone drops something and you can reach it, pick it up and hand
(do not throw) it back to the person.
24. If you bump into someone, say “Excuse me,” or “I’m sorry.”
25. Do not bring cheese curls into the school building.
26. If any student in the school is bothering you, let me know. I will
take care of the situation.
27. Never, ever, badmouth another member of the faculty in my presence.
Keep your opinions to yourself.
28. My desk, computer, and chair are off limits.
29. You are allowed 5 minutes from the classroom to the lav and back.
You must sign in and out. If you do not, you will be grounded from the lav.
30. Be sure to refer to teachers by “Mr.” or “Ms.” so and so. Do not,
for example, call me “Hyder.” It’s Miss (not Mrs., that’s my mom) Hyder.
31. Do not write or doodle on the desks. If caught, you will be
responsible for paying for the damages.
32. If you have to be asked more than once to be quiet, you will be
written up for disruption. If I have to ask you to leave the room, you will
lose 5 points on your quarterly average.
33. Do not curse. It makes you sound like an ignorant hick.
34. You will not be given writing utensils in this class.
35. Do not be late for class. Each late will result in 1 point off your
quarterly average. Exception: a pass or call from the teacher that held you.
36. Do not write in books or rip pages from them.
37. Be positive. Always see the good in every situation.
38. Accept that you will make mistakes. I do! Learn from them and move
on.
39. No matter what, always be honest. Many times I will forget about
punishment because of honesty. If I find out that you have lied, your
punishment will be doubled.
40. Be the best person you can be.
