PA History & Civics – 8th Grade
Welcome to your 8th grade year at Greater Nanticoke Area High School! This class outline is designed to help you understand more about the expectations and policies for 8th grade PA History & Civics. I am looking forward to a rewarding year with you!

3-ring binder or notebook
Black or blue ink pen or pencil
Assigned textbook
**If you are unable to work because you are unprepared, you will not beallowed to go to your locker.

Textbook:
American Civics

Your grade will be determined in the following areas:
                           · Tests- 40%
                           · Homework – 20%
                           · Quizzes – 15%
                           · Notebook - 15%
                           · Attendance and Participation- 10%

Absenteeism:
It is the responsibility of the student to get missed assignments when absent. Assignments given when you are in class are expected to be turned in on time or on your first day back at school. Please check my website for make-up work. Please make every effort to be here every day!!!

Late Work:
All work is due on time.  Unexcused late work will be accepted, but will be graded accordingly.  No homework will be accepted late at 100% value. You will not be allowed to go to your locker to get homework! Late homework will be counted at 90% value after 1 day and will decrease by 10% each day thereafter. After five days, maximum grade will be 20% credit.  Keep all homework until you are satisfied with your marking period grade. If you claim you turned something in and I didn’t record it, then the returned homework is your proof that you did it.

Missed Tests/Quizzes:
If you miss a test, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to make it up…I will NOT chase you around to have you make up a test/quiz.  Also remember that if you miss a test and the class was allowed to use their notes for a few minutes, you will not be allowed to use your notes on the makeup. A missed test is devastating to your grade. Respond accordingly.

Class Expectations:

1. Students are expected to arrive in class on time every day. Tardiness and unexcused absences will affect your grade.

2. Students are expected to come prepared each day. Preparation includes homework (assignment), books, pen, paper and attitude.

3. Students will follow any and all codes of conduct set forth by the Greater Nanticoke Area School District and any behavior policies announced in my class.

4.  Students will respect all personal property, school property, me, and each other.  You will respect any adult who comes into this room, especially a SUBSTITUTE teacher. If a substitute teacher leaves your name behind for any reason, other than you were the most helpful student ever, you will serve an automatic triple detention.

5.  You will do your own work. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero on the assignment, a triple detention will be assigned, and I will call home to your parents to advise them of this situation.

Classroom Procedures:

1.  Please do not bring food, drink, gum, or other personal items into the classroom.

2.  Please enter and exit the classroom in a calm manner.  You are expected to be in your assigned seat when class begins and attendance is being taken.

3.  TWO students will be allowed to use the bathroom pass at the BEGINNING of each class.  If you have a medical condition, please see me privately.  Those who abuse bathroom privileges will be grounded.  Come to class with your restroom needs satisfied.

4.  Absolutely NO music devices or cellular phones are allowed in the classroom.  If caught with such devices, you will be requested to surrender them to me.  You can pick up your device from me at the end of the day.  Refusal to surrender the device will result in a referral for suspension.

5.  Students will listen and follow directions.

6.  Students will raise their hands and wait to be called on before speaking.

Website:
I have a website that I update regularly. If you have access to the internet, you will find links to other websites, class work, due dates, upcoming assignments, grades and test dates. I will keep all assignments for the whole quarter before deleting.  The site is very user friendly and can be found on the GNA website.  Click on the High School link, then the Teachers/Support Staff link, and then on my name.
