Graphic Arts Department
Every paper needs an artistic eye in charge of layout and design of the
paper. This person is responsible for making your newspaper look good.
While the editor of the front page is responsible for writing the actual
article, it is the Graphic Arts Department that is responsible for pictures
and the final printed newspaper. Below you will find many of the jobs that
the Graphic Arts Department is responsible.
1. The Newspaper Heading Design
- Create the heading and style for the paper.
- Make sure to include the date of publication.
- Give credit to those on the day's newspaper staff.
2. Photographs
- You pick all the photos for the paper as well as any logos.
- Pictures must be accurate to the setting of the story.
- Pictures should represent what the article is about.
3. Display of the articles and columns in editorial and front page.
- How many columns will the paper have?
- You decide the size of font and how the layout looks.
4. One full page of advertisements from The Great Depression
- Every newspaper has to make money. You create the ads.
- Ads should be accurate to the time of the story and The Great
Depression.
- Your advertisement page should look professional and contain real
products.
5. Extras
- To really seperate your newspaper from all others, add additional
features. These include but are not limited to...
- Accurate movie listings/images
- Grocery store flyers
- Personal Ads i.e. For Sale, Help Wanted,
- A comic strip or two
