Lehman-Jackson Elementary:
Welcome to Second Grade
I would like to take
this time to welcome you to second grade. Hopefully, the following
information will be useful to help make your child’s year enjoyable and
educational. If you need to contact your me, you can send a note or call my
extention at 2-B:
255-2730.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
1. Whenever your child is
absent, your child must bring in an excuse on the excuse/early dismissal
form. Please make sure your excuse includes the date(s) of absence, reason,
and parent’s signature. Be sure to send it with your child the day he/she
returns to school. The absentee forms can be found in the office or at the LL
website.
2. Students purchasing
lunch should bring their lunch money on Mon. or Tues. Please enclose payment
in an envelope. Put your child’s name, section, and lunch account # on the
envelope so the cafeteria can credit the proper account.
3. Homework will be
assigned Mon-Thurs. I will try to limit the amount of homework given on Fri.
When students are completing questions, please be sure they answer them in
complete sentences using part of the question in their answer. If absent,
please have your child complete the missed assignments as soon as possible.
Please spend some time reviewing our daily work with your child. Some of the
work will be kept in portfolios and/or to be hung in the classroom, but most
will be sent home. Homework logs have been provided by the school for your
use. Please take the time to check your child’s homework and sign their
assignment book.
4. Recess: Please be sure
your child is dressed properly for the existing weather conditions. We will
try to go outside for recess as frequently as possible.
5. I insist on the use of
good manners in our classroom. A list of classroom rules and expectations are
displayed in the room. I expect students to be respectful and to take
responsibility for themselves and their actions.
6. Please make sure your
child is prepared for class with pencils, homework, notebooks, and
assignments. The students will receive a homework grade in every subject. It
is extremely important that the students complete their homework.
7. Grading: Tests,
quizzes, projects, class work, homework, class participation
8. Handwriting: Our book
is divided into two sections: printing and cursive writing. I will start
teaching cursive in the month of November. Please stress neatness at home.
9. Our 6-day special
schedule is Day 1: N/A, Day 2: Music, Day 3: Art, Day 4: Gym, Day 5 Study
Island 6: Library.
10. Please send in a note
if you will be picking up your child early, or at dismissal.
11. EARLY DISMISSAL
DAYS: Please be sure your child knows where to go! Early dismissal days can
be very confusing. A note must be sent in, if your child is not to go home on
the bus. If your child is scheduled to go to Wee Care, I need notice of that
also. Without a note, your child will be sent home on his/her regular bus.
12. Conferences-there are
conferences in November and March. I will contact you for scheduling a
specific time. During November’s conference you can schedule a conference for
March.
13. Grades for report
cards will be numerical. They are as follows: A =94-100, B=86-93, C=78-85,
D=70-77, F= 0-69. If your child receives a test grade below an 80, it
must be signed and returned the following day.
14. If any medical
problems arise please notify both the school nurse and homeroom teacher. All
prescription medication must be in the original container, stored in the
health room and administered by the school nurse.
15. Book and software
order forms will be sent home with your children. The secret to improving
reading skills is for your child to read as much as possible. These book and
software clubs provide you an opportunity to purchase current materials at
very good prices and can be invaluable in helping to improve you child’s
reading ability. Check should be made payable to SCHOLASTIC.
16. Reading
is important and will be done independently on a daily basis. Please make
sure your child reads at home.
17. An afternoon snack
period is provided. Please send in a nutritional snack. No soda,
candy, or sweets will be allowed. Yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and crackers are
examples of nutritional snacks.
18. If there is a change
in your family situation, please notify me as soon as possible. This can
greatly affect your child’s performance and behavior. Together we can work to
make any transitions as smooth as possible.
19. Make-up work is
available upon request through the office once your child is absent 3
consecutive days. Please call early in the day so it can be prepared for
pick-up.
20. Major holidays are
celebrated throughout the year. I will contact you about the celebrations in
more detail.
21. We use a lot of
tissues and soap in our classroom. One box of tissues, refill size containers
of antibacterial soap, and/or hand sanitizer would be greatly appreciated.
22. Birthday celebrations
will be held upon request. Food is not allowed to be sent in for birthday
celebrations. Please notify the homeroom teacher if you plan to send something
to school to help celebrate your child’s birthday.
23. The school District
has a dress code for students. Please review it and make sure your children
adhere to the policy.
24. AR: Accelerated
Reading is a program developed to encourage and improve reading. Students will
read for 30 minutes each day. Students will be given an AR folder to be kept
in their take-home folders. Please log any books read at home on the log
sheet. Students do not have to take a test on every book they read, but will
have a specific goal to reach each marking quarter. See the AR page for more
information.
25. LANGUAGE ARTS:
Language Arts consists of reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and phonics.
Second grade has two reading books, 2.1 and 2.2. Each book contains three
themes. I will teach Language Arts on a M-F schedule.
-
Weekly Reading
test = Thursdays
-
Weekly Spelling test =
Fridays
26. SPELLING: Students
will be given a spelling pretest at the beginning of each week. The spelling
words for each unit can be found on the unit sheet found in the return side of
the take-home folder.
Parent/Teacher
communication is very important and I appreciate you taking time out of your
busy schedule to read this information. I hope most of your questions have
been answered. I’m very excited about this year’s class and looking forward
to a very exhilarating and productive school year with your child. Let’s work
together to make second grade a wonderful year.
