MEMORIAL DAY - NO SCHOOL
TUESDAY - MAY 26, 2009:
Begin reading Chapter 8, Lesson 4 "Samuel's Choice" on pages 306-309.
Complete the "Literature Review" (#1-3) on page 309. Ask students to take
part in the conversation that was written by students in response to question
#3 on page 309 between Samuel and other slaves on Isaac's farm. This is
strictly voluntary. The assignment will be graded on "political correctness"
concerning the slaves at this time.
WEDNESDAY - MAY 27, 2009:
Go back to Chapter 8 "The War for Independence" and read Lesson 1 "At
War with the Homeland" beginning on page 289. Discuss terms: olive branch,
Continental, mercenary and enlist, in addition to the review questions found
on pages 290, 291, 292 and the Lesson 1 Review (#1-4) on page 293.
THURSDAY - MAY 28, 2009: (single period)
1/2 Day - Early Dismissal (11:30 A.M. for Middle School)
KENNYWOOD DAY - students will leave the school at 10 A.M. for Kennywood.
Continue Chapter 8 by reading Lesson 2 "The Decision for Independence"
beginning on page 295. Discuss terms: revolution, independence, allegiance,
declaration and grievance, in addition to the review questions found on pages
297, 299 and the Lesson 2 Review (#1-4) on page 299.
FRIDAY - MAY 29, 2009: (single period)
D.A.R.E. GRADUATION PROGRAM (Grade 5) - 9:00 A.M.
PICNIC IN THE PARK - time to be determined.

MONDAY - JUNE 1, 2009:
Students will learn to identify the states/capitals by playing "Social
Studies" Bingo. Use the regular bingo directions - vertically, horizontally,
diagonally, four corners, postage stamp, big/little diamond or picture frame.
Winners will receive candy for a prize.
TUESDAY - JUNE 2, 2009:
Continue the social studies bingo, but add different facts about the
state like the "nickname". Winners will receive candy for a prize - only one
winner @ round.
WEDNESDAY - JUNE 3, 2009: AWARDS DAY
Schedule to be determined. Social Studies books will be collected and
stored for the summer.
THURSDAY - JUNE 4, 2009: EARLY DISMISSAL - 8th GRADE PROMOTION
Schedule to be determined - usually a single period.
FRIDAY - JUNE 5, 2009: EARLY DISMISSAL - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
