2011 - 2012

Curriculum

Each teacher follows a set of guidelines developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for most subjects.

Grading/Subjects

Letter grades are given in the following areas: religion, math, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. Grades are determined by tests, class work, class participation, projects and a variety of assessment practices. Second graders receive the following letter grades.

O          Consistently produces work of outstanding quality and applies all learned skills

VG        Regularly produces work of high quality and applies the learned skills

G          Frequently produces quality work and applies learned skills

S           Produces work of satisfactory quality and usually applies the learned skills

I            Produces work of inconsistent quality and needs frequent re-teaching: improvement is necessary

U          Produces work of unsatisfactory quality

Report Cards

Report cards will be distributed three times, on a trimester basis. Please review the report card with your child and discuss areas to improve upon. Make a goal for the following semester. Don’t forget to highlight their accomplishments! All report card envelopes should be returned the following school day. You are to keep the report card.

Tests

All tests will be sent home in a designated folder. There is no set day for these tests to come home in second grade. The new tests will be placed in the “unsigned” section of the folder. Please review the tests and assist your child in correcting any errors. Sign the tests at the top and place the signed tests in the section marked “signed”. Test folders will be emptied after each semester. Please do not empty the folder before being instructed. If you have any questions regarding a test question, please write a separate note to inform me of your concern. I do not review the test folders weekly and I may not notice your inquiry.  Please refer to Gradebook to keep updated on your child’s grades. If you happen to notice a discrepancy with the grades, please let me know. If you have trouble logging into your account, also let me know.

Homework

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has determined that 30 minutes of homework is sufficient for a first grader. Parents should check all homework assignments and assist as needed. If your child is having consistent difficulties with homework, please do not hesitate to inform me of this. I will work with you and your child to help ease their homework struggles. Missed homework assignments will result in a homework slip. Please sign and return all homework slips. Three slips will result in two demerits. Demerits are cumulative.

Lateness/Absences

Any child arriving to school after 8:45 will be considered late. A late slip must be picked up at the front desk before entering the classroom.

When your child is going to be absent, please call the school office in the morning and leave word with Mrs. Caton or Mrs. Farley. I will gather the day’s assignments and send them home with a sibling or neighbor. Please specify who should receive their work. Please be aware that work is expected to be picked up on the day of their absence. If you pick up their work, all books will be located at the front desk. Missed work will be sent down at the end of the school day.

Please write an absence note on the day of your child’s arrival to explain the reason for his/her absence. A doctor’s note is required if your child has been absent for three or more days.

Snack/Recess

We will have a recess and snack time every day at 10:30. Our lunch period is at 12:15 every day EXCEPT Thursday. On Thursday, we will have lunch at 12:45.  Keep this in mind when packing your child’s snack. Drinks for snack are permitted, especially during the hotter months. Snack will also take place on half days. During rainy and cold days, recess will be indoors. Please encourage your child to bring in a favorite game/activity to play with during this time.

Visits

Any visitor to the classroom must check in with the front desk. If it is a scheduled visit, I will notify the front desk of your expected arrival time. For safety reasons, no one is permitted to walk down the hallways without permission from the office. A special badge will be required for all visitors. If you would like to meet with me, please contact the office and I will return your call to set up a scheduled meeting.

Book Clubs

When ordering from Scholastic or Troll book clubs, please make a check payable to the book company. No cash will be accepted. Please check my web site for instructions for ordering online. I usually send home a flyer each month from the book companies. Please look for the flyer before logging onto the web site.

 Birthdays

Birthday treats are permitted. Please do not send in a knife or candles with the treat. If possible, please inform me of the treat a day or so before, just in case another snack item is being considered. If you wish to donate a game or a book to the class instead of treats, that is fine.

Other

Each week your child will receive a worksheet detailing the words learned in our reading program for that particular week’s stories. The spelling words will be listed (tests are usually on Fridays.), the vocabulary words are listed, as well as high frequency words. High frequency words are words that second graders will come in contact with and should know the words with automaticity. Please review the words weekly. I also list words to practice that follow the weekly skills in our readers. Many of these words will appear on the reading tests at the end of each unit. (I am hoping to have these worksheets on line in an attempt to save on paper. I will keep you informed once this happens. ) Don’t forget to look for the Family Times newsletter to come home every Monday. This comes from our reading series and includes a fun activity for parents and child to play while also reinforcing specific skills.

Please visit my class web page to be informed of homework assignments, news from 2nd grade, pictures of your child during their school day and lots more!   You can use this link below or access it through www.mdpschool.com as well.
