Literature Circle

Literature Circles are student-centered book discussion groups that teach the children to work cooperatively and increase their comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.  The students received a packet explaining the weekly assignments. We will work in groups every Friday.

The Secret School by Avi, a Newberry Medal winner, is our first story. It is an historical fiction book  that takes us back to the days of the one-room schoolhouse in a remote Colorado town. I have purchased the books for the class as well as several others that we'll be using in the upcoming months.

                                 LITERATURE CIRCLE ROLE DESCRIPTIONS

Summarizer

Your task is to write and present to the group a summary of the events in the pages you read. Include important characters, settings, problems and solutions. When you are finished, anyone who would like to add something may raise their stick to be called on and place one stick in the cup when they begin talking.

Word Smith

Your task is to search this week’s reading assignment for 5 new or unfamiliar words to share with your group. On the WORDSMITH sheet write the word, Part of Speech, Page it was on, Definition, and an Original Sentence using the word correctly.

Question Writer

Your task is to create 3 to 5

interesting questions about the section you read. Try to think of questions that will get your group to dig into the book and share their thoughts and opinions. Use the Question sheet to help if you need it. Whoever answers a question must put their stick in the cup.

Story Sketcher

Your task is to draw an important event from this week’s reading assignment. It can be a picture of your favorite part, a character, the setting, a prediction as to what will happen next, or an idea or feeling you got from the story. Share your drawing with your group and let them talk about it first. Then tell them what your picture means to you and why you think this event is important.

 JOURNAL RESPONSE *** EVERYONE

Use the Journal Prompts page and choose one of the prompts for your journal writing.

Select a different prompt each week.
