Summer Reading List

Here are some grade appropriate books for your child to read this summer. 
Most of these titles can be purchased at Barnes and Noble or rented at 
Chester County Library.

SECOND GRADE ENTERING THIRD GRADE:

"Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective" - Donald J. Sobol   Ten-year-old Leroy 
(nicknamed “Encyclopedia”) Brown always manages to solve his father’s cases 
at the dinner table, so he decides to pen his own detective agency.

"Fables" - Arnold Lobel   Twenty original fables about an array of animal 
characters from crocodile to ostrich. Caldecott Medal Book

"The Faithful Friend"  - Robert D. San Souci  A retelling of the traditional 
tale from the French West Indies in which two friends, Clement and 
Hippolyte, encounter love, zombies, and danger on the island of Martinique. 
Caldecott Honor Book and a Coretta Scott King Honor Book

"How to Be Cool in the Third Grade" - Betsy Duffey   When Robbie York is 
marked as a target by a bully at school, he decides that the only way to 
survive the third grade is by being cool. 
"I and You and Don't Forget Who: What Is a Pronoun?" - Brian P. Cleary   
This 
book tells a story in rhyme, using different types of pronouns, leading 
children to become more apt to remember what pronouns are.
 
"I Was a Third Grade Science Project" - Mary Jane Auch    Josh and his best 
friend, Brian, the class brain, team up for their science project. While 
Josh takes a passive interest in it, Brian comes up with the idea of 
hypnotizing his dog, Arful, into thinking he's a cat.
 
"Math For All Seasons" - Greg Tang  Fun math riddles that will help you 
stretch your mind. Rhyming verses, clues, and twists to help you quickly 
solve math problems. Learn clever tricks for counting throughout the year.

"Pink and Say"- Patricia Polacco   This heart-wrenching historical picture 
book, based on a true story, presents us with two men from the Union army 
who meet after a battle of the Civil War. Say, the white younger man, has 
been wounded. Pink, a black man, carries him home to where his mother is 
surviving in ruins of a deserted plantation.

"Ramona Quimby, Age 8" – Beverly Clearly   Ramona Quimby, one of the most 
loved
characters in children's fiction, has now reached third grade. At school, 
she acquires a
new teacher, Mrs. Whaley, who addresses the class as "you guys." Newbery 
Honor Book

"Snowflake Bentley" - Jacqueline Briggs Martin  A biography of a self-taught 
scientist who photographed thousands of individual snowflakes in order to 
study their unique formations. Caldecott Medal Book

"Tea with Milk" - Allen Say   After growing up near San Francisco, a young 
Japanese woman returns with her parents to their native Japan, but she feels 
foreign and out of place.

"Whipping Boy" – Sid Fleischman   Jemmy is Prince Brat's whipping boy, 
taking any punishment due to the prince, until the prince decides to run 
away, taking Jemmy with him and leading them into a series of adventures 
with notorious outlaws. Newbery Medal Book

"Young Thomas Edison" - Michael Dooling    Includes bibliographical 
references. Presents a short illustrated biography of inventor Thomas 
Edison, and chronicles his childhood and early interest in science, as well 
as his many inventions.
