The 2009-10 school year will be my first year teaching seventh grade
English classes. I am very excited to see many of you again and meet those of
you I don't already know!
I have a diverse background. Many of you will already know me as I have
been the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) teacher at Worrall
and Culbertson schools for the last four and a half years. Before coming to
work at Marple Newtown, I taught Spanish, French and Humanities at Kensington
High School in Philadelphia for three and a half years.
Before I was a teacher, I worked in the healthcare system in
Philadelphia, mostly in the Department of Psychiatry at both the University of
Pennsylvania and Temple Health Systems.
I have degrees from the State University of New York at Geneseo, Temple
University and LaSalle University. I also spent a year studying at the
Instituto Internacional in Madrid, Spain where I focused on Spanish literature
and poetry.
I live in Chester County with my daughter who will be in Kindergarten
this fall. We are both looking forward to the beginning of her formal
education!
I enjoy reading, travel and cooking. Of course, many of my activities
are centered around my daughter's activities.
I am thrilled to be joining the fabulous staff at Paxon Hollow and am
anticipating a great year of a new challenge with my seventh graders!
The uniting theme of seventh grade English is tolerance versus intolerance.
Our readings throughout the year (including the required summer reading!) will
center around this theme.
Per the seventh grade English curriculum, we will be focusing on five (5) key
items this year:
- interacting with the readings
- composition (oral and written)
- independent reading and writing
- investigating language
- learning to learn
We will focus on improving each student's writing, developing a more
sophisticated writing style. Included in this, we take a closer look at each
of the ways we can improve our writing: prewriting techniques, editing,
formulating a topic sentence, supporting thoughts with detail and developing a
conclusion.
We will begin the year with the required summer readings, so come prepared!
