The ABC's of Mrs. Wundschock's Fifth Grade Class
Absence
Regular school attendance is critical to the learning process. When your
child is absent, he or she misses valuable instructional time. We have
adopted a "Safe at School" program at Deibler. Please call our office (215-
257-1146) each morning your child will be absent from school. After two
consecutive days of absence, you may arrange for missed work to be sent
home. If your child is absent from school and we have not been notified, our
office personnel will call you to confirm your child's absence. Please
return an excuse blank on the day your child returns to school.
Acceptance
In our classroom students will treat classmates and others with respect. All
members of our class will feel special because we will accept each other
regardless of our differences.
Arrival
We begin each day at 8:50a.m. Students arriving after this time should check
in at the office before reporting to the classroom. Please make every effort
to arrive to school on time.
Backpacks
Your child will need his/her backpack everyday. He/she will be bringing home
library books, completed work, announcements, and homework. Please check
your child¡¦s backpack daily.
Birthdays
Students are permitted to bring a snack to school to share with classmates
on their special day. Those children with summer birthdays may either
celebrate their half birthday (6 months into the year), or during the last
week of school. ***Please use the Deibler Directory to send party
invitations through the United States Postal Service. Students are not
permitted to pass out invitations at school.
***Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.***
Communication
Communication between home and school is very important. I am usually
available to speak directly to you between 8-8:30 a.m. and 4-4:30 p.m.
However, phone any time of the day to leave a message on voicemail or with
our school secretary. I will respond as soon as possible.

Conferences
Conferences are scheduled after the first nine weeks of school. You may
schedule a conference at any time during the school year if you have
questions or concerns.
Discipline
Establishing good classroom discipline is essential to each child¡¦s
success, confidence, and well being. Every child should feel that the
classroom environment is safe and secure, as well as free from all threats
of physical and emotional harm. In addition, it is important that each child
learn to develop self-discipline and good work habits, resolve conflicts
peacefully, and think independently.
Dismissal
Dismissal begins at 3:30p.m. If you need to pick up your child early, please
send a note or call the office. For your child¡¦s safety, we can not dismiss
children from the classroom without a parent/guardian first signing him/her
out. For any unusual dismissal arrangements, such as taking a different bus
or going home with a friend, please send a note with your child in the
morning. Please do not email me with changes to your child's dismissal
procedure. You must contact the school office.
Effort
I hold high expectations for each and every student in my class. I expect
and encourage my students to do their best in everything they do.
Field Trips
Fifth grade will take several field trips this year. They include trips to
Gettysburg, N.J. Sate Aquarium, Camp America, the Vocational Technical
School, North Middle School, and South Middle School for a Civil War Era
Living History Experience. Our generous PTO and the holiday cookie dough
sale both contribute to the cost of these trips; however, an additional fee
will need to be assessed. The student fee varies each year dependant on fuel
costs and funds contributed by PTO and the cookie dough sale. Please read
our class newsletter each week for more information.
Groups
At various times the children will sit and work in groups. Cooperation
skills are essential to learning and working in the 21st century.
Homework
Fifth grade students are expected to have homework Monday ¡V Thursday
nights. Agendas have been provided by the district to help students
organize. Homework consists of a weekly homework packet and a nightly
reading calendar called READING COUNTS. Science and Social Studies homework
will be assigned as needed. Please check your child¡¦s Agenda nightly.
Math, Language Arts and Spelling homework assignments will be handed out in
a weekly packet each Friday to be returned on or before Thursday of the
following week. If a child does not return the packet on Thursday, he/she
will stay in at recess to complete the work. Students who return the packet
before Thursday will earn a reward.Students are also required to read for 20
minutes each night as part of their regular homework assignment. A
parent/guardian should initial the READING COUNTS CALENDAR inside your
child's Agenda each night. When a student has read for 100 days, he/she
will receive a reward. Students will also be required to complete a
quarterly book report at home on an assigned book. I have found this program
to be a successful way to encourage students to read daily, thus fostering
the development of reading skills and a love of reading.
Incentive Program - "That's the Ticket"
In Math, students may choose to complete extra skills and/or problem solving
worksheets to earn tickets. Tickets can be used to purchase special items
and privileges. This incentive program is designed to encourage students to
practice skills and extend their learning in Math.
Jumping to Conclusions
Please do not jump to conclusions when your child comes home telling you
about something that happened at school. In their youth and limited
experience, children can easily misinterpret and/or misunderstand events
that take place around them. Please contact me with any specific concerns.
Kindness
Students in my classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of
our class, as well as others, with kindness and respect.
Lost and Found
Lost and found items are stored in the Gym Lobby. Please check there for
missing coats, hats, books, etc. throughout the year.
Lunch Money
Please provide your child with a change purse or wallet to hold lunch money.
Money stored in pockets is often lost during recess. ļ
Monday
Look for your child's Sign and Return Envelope and Weekly Newsletter to
come home on the first school day of each week. Please sign and return the
envelope as soon as possible.
Newsletter
A classroom newsletter will be sent home in your child¡¦s sign and return
packet each Monday. The newsletter will contain announcements, upcoming
events, and other general information. It is also posted on my website each
week.
Open House
Open House is a terrific opportunity for us to meet! During this time you
will also have the opportunity visit our classroom and explore some of the
fifth grade curricular materials.
Progress Reports
Fifth grade students will receive both and an indication of their
performance level with respect to standards (EX, ME, AP, BE) and a letter
grade (A, B, C, D, F- based on performance level) on their Progress Reports.
Please see the attached sample Progress Report.
Questions
Please feel free to contact me anytime you have a question or concern.
Reading Counts (Nightly Reading Homework)
As part of their regular homework, students are required to read for 20
minutes four nights a week. A parent/guardian should initial the READING
COUNTS CALENDAR inside your child's Agenda each night. When a student has
read for 100 days, he/she will have earned a treat from me. Students will
also be required to complete a quarterly book report at home on an assigned
book.
Restroom Privileges
The class will go to the restroom at designated times. Additionally,
students are permitted to use the facilities during independent work
periods. If your child has a related medical condition please let me know.

This club offers many popular books at reasonable prices. Please pay by
check made out to Scholastic Book Club.

extra supplies at home for future use. In addition, students should consider
having a stretchy book cover (jumbo sized) to put on textbooks needed for
homework.

foods such as carrots, fruit, dry cereal, and crackers are good choices.
Please do not send juice boxes.

test. Tests in Social Studies, Science, and Math will be announced in

at all other times of the day. Please understand that toys brought to school
are easily lost or broken. Students must decide carefully if they are
willing to accept this risk. Electronic toys and equipment are not permitted.

unexcused. Please sign and return an excuse blank as soon as possible.
