How important is attendance in Kindergarten?
I am a real stickler about attendance. The Kindergarten program
is much more strenuous and demanding than it used to be. Every
day builds upon the day before it. Your child needs to be in
school on time every day unless they are truly sick. We do not
have time in our program to catch up children who miss
frequently. Our day begins immediately with the attendance
report, lunch count, collection of notes/homework and a daily
planning session. Late arriving children interrupt the flow of
activities and miss important information/directions. Please
make every effort to have your child here on time. I want them
to have the full benefit of our program.
What should we be practicing to prepare for school?
-Writing first name with upper case (first letter only) and lower
case letters
-Counting to 20 by ones
-Zipping, buttoning, snapping, fastening belts (self-help skills)
-Naming numbers and alphabet letters instantly
-Reading with an adult every day/night
-Rhyming (listening for rhymes and making rhymes)
How can parents stay informed?
-Check the schoolbag every night for important papers
-Make sure you keep us updated with new phone numbers and
emergency contact information. I have had difficulty reaching
some parents when their numbers have changed. If your child
becomes sick or in the event of a school emergency, we must be
able to reach you.
-Read the Friday newsletters and mark your calendar with
important dates
How and when can I contact the teacher?
I believe that a good parent/teacher relationship is necessary
for maximum school success. Throughout the year, I will
communicate with parents through notes, phone calls, weekly
newsletters, report cards and conferences. I encourage you to
contact me if you have questions or concerns.
- You can call me at school (610) 522-4365 ext. 7201
before 8:40 AM and after 3:20 PM. I usually do not answer the
phone during the times that the children are in my care. Leave a
message and I will return your call as soon as I can. Please
contact the office if you have an urgent request or anything that
requires immediate attention.
- You can email me at hciterone@sedelco.org
- You can always send a note with your child. Just remind them
that they have a note in their bag for me. I do not check the
children's bags. They are responsible for checking each day and
are reminded to do so.
Why are the notes and homework I sent in still in my child's schoolbag?
Besides academics, I am trying to teach the children
responsibility and self-help skills. We start each day with
several reminders to "check schoolbags for notes, homework,
learning totes, library books, pretzel money..." If
attentive, the children should also be visually reminded by the
other children in their group who are checking bags and turning
in papers. I will not go in a child's bag to retrieve anything -
it really is a privacy issue. Your reminders from home and my
repetitive asking should eventually do the trick. If not, a
quick phone call alerting me to the problem can also be
effective.
