Curriculum

 
                               Visual Arts

St. Philip School and the Diocese of Pittsburgh have compliled a curriculum which covers the National 
Standards for the Visual Arts.  They are as follows:

1.The students will  be able to use various media and techniques.
2.   The student will be able to use basic knowledge  of structures (elements of art and principles of           
   design) and functions(how they work together).
3. The student will be able to choose and evaluate a variety of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
4. The students will be able to demonstrate understanding of visual arts in relation to history and 
     culture.
5. The students will be able to reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work
    and the work of others.
6. The students will be able to make connections between the visual arts and other disciplines.

All of the above standards are included in the Visual Arts curriculum at St. Philip School.  The books 
used in the Visual Arts  curriculum are "Art in Action" by Coronado,  "Creative and Performing Arts" 
issued by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit  and the Diocese of pittsburgh and a wide variety of 
supplemental materials pertaining to  art media, art history, art concepts, and art curriculum.  


                              Library

St. Philip School and the Diocese of Pittsburgh have compiled a curriculum which covers the National 
Standards for Informational literacy.  They are as follows:

1. The student will access information efficiently by recognizing the need for information,recognizing 
that accurate and comprehensive information is the basis for intelligent decision making, formulating 
questions based on informational needs, identifying  a variety of potential sources of information, 
and developing and using successful stategies for locating information.

2. The student will evaluate information critically and completely by determining accuracy, relevance, 
and comprehensiveness,  by distinguishing amoung fact, point of view, and opinion, by identifying 
and  misleading information, and selecting information appropriate to the problem and question at 
hand.

3. The student will be able to use information accurately and creatively by organizing information for 
practical purposes, by integrating new knowledge into one's own knowledge, by applying information 
in critical thinking and problem solving, and by producing and communicating ideas in appropriate 
formats.

4.The student will be information literate and  persue information related to personal interests by 
seeking information related to dimesions of personal interests,  by designing developing,   and by 
evaluating information products and solutions related to personal interests.

5. The student will appreciate literature and other forms of espression by being a self motivated 
reader,  by deriving meaning from information presented creatively in a variety of formats, and 
developing creative products in a variety of formats.

6, The student will strive for excellence in information seeking and knowledge  generation by 
devising stategies for revising, improving, and updating  self- generated knowledge.

7. The student will recognize the importance of information in a democratic society by  seeking 
information from diverse sources, contexts, disciplines, and cultures, by respecting  intellectual 
property rights, and by using informational  sources responsibly.

8. Technology standard

9. The student will participate  effectively in groups to pursue and generate information by sharing 
information with others, and respecting others ideas and background and acknowledging their 
contributions. 


The Library classes will use a variety of curriculum books covering  library information, books 
available ing the library for personal reading,  group reading,  and research, various study techniques 
avalilble in publication,  and the Simple  Solutions math series.
