Nutrients- materials that living things need
*food (soil) , water, air, sunlight,
Parts of a Plant
1. Roots- grow down in the soil and hold the plant in place
*take water to the stem
2. stem- holds up the plant
*carries water and nutrients to leaves
3. leaves- take in sunlight and air
*make food
4. flower- make seeds
5. seeds- turn into a new plant
Seeds are scattered by air, water, people, and animals
*The seeds are shaped so that they can travel.
Plants are grouped by
1. having flowers (fruit trees)
2. no flowers. (pine trees)
Environment- all living and nonliving things around it
Adapted- changed to live in the environment
Types of environments and plants
1. Woodland environments -warm summers and cold winters
maple trees -lose their leaves to adapt to the winters
fanwort- adapted to live in water, water moves easily through its leaves
2. Prairie- hot summers and little rain
goldenrod- stiff stems to hold the water they need
prairie smoke- has fuzz to trap the cool air
3. Desert- hot days and cool nights
saguaro cactus- long thick stems to hold water
octopus tree- short leaves and long spines to protects its
leaves from being eaten
4. Marsh- very wet
sundew plant- sticky hairs to catch insects for the nutrients they need
Venus' flytrap- eat insects to get nutrients
