Codes of Conduct

This page details the committment , character and behavior we expect and require from our coaches/volunteers, players and parents.

COACHES / VOLUNTEERS Code of Conduct

Commissioners & coaches will be selected once this philosophy is agreed to & 
the CYO Coaches Pledge is understood. It reads:

Upon my honor as a CYO coach, I pledge myself to the following:

To guide each player to be a better Christian and better citizen.
To be ethical and sportsmanlike in my coaching conduct towards all players,
officials, fans and other coaches.
To motivate each player to compete according to the rules at all times.
To teach each player, especially though my own example, to be humble and
generous in victory and proud and courteous in defeat.


All Coaches:

1) Will interview for their positions. It is recommended that all coaches
reapply every year and all Head coaches must attend the CYO Coaches
orientation before start of their 2nd year.

2) of grade school teams must meet the age requirement of 21 by the
beginning of the season that they are coaching. 25 for High School coaches.
Assistant Coaches should be mature Christian men or women who have completed
the Coaches Orientation Program.

3) will adhere to any additional Parish requirements such as background &
child abuse checks must be completed. This has become mandatory by the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

4) must involve team in Parish or community service opportunities.

5) will attend mass on a regular basis.

6) challenge their young people to grow spiritually by involving them in
parish religious activities.

7) must recognize & embrace their role as a minister to youth through
athletics.

8) must teach gospel values through their words & actions.

9) communicate the importance of prayer by making it a part of their
practices & games.

10) are responsible for their team�s fans concerning conduct and the fans
adherence to Parish & CYO guidelines.


Coaches must adhere to the Code of Conduct outlined in the CYO Athletic
Handbook.

No CYO Coach is to:

1) Refuse to abide by an official�s decision.

2) Be guilty of objectionable demonstrations by throwing equipment or any
other forceful action.

3) Be guilty of heaping personal verbal abuse upon any official for any
decision or judgment.

4) Be guilty of an abusive verbal attack upon any athlete, coach, official
or spectator.

5) At any time lay hands upon, push, shove, strike, threaten to strike, or
physically attack an athlete, coach, official, or spectator.


Any infraction is subject to the penalties outlined in the CYO Athletic
Handbook. Each CYO coach is responsible for the safety of each player as
outlined in the CYO Athletic Handbook ensuring that all players wear the
proper & mandatory equipment as well as ensuring that all facilities, indoor
& outdoor are safe & free from hazards.



NOTE: In the event of accident the coach is responsible for completing the
Notification of Injury document when a player or volunteer is injured during
an event no matter how minor the injury may appear.

PLAYERS Code of Conduct

Each player must adhere to the following Code of Conduct.



No CYO Player is to:

�Refuse to abide by an official�s decision.

�Be guilty of objectionable demonstrations by throwing equipment or any
other forceful action.

�Be guilty of heaping personal verbal abuse upon any official for any
decision or judgment.

�Be guilty of an abusive verbal attack upon any athlete, coach, official or
spectator, or at any time lay hands upon, push, shove, strike, threaten to
strike, or physically attack an athlete, coach, official, or spectator.


All Players will:

1. Be subject to the penalties outlined in the CYO Athletic
Handbook for any infraction.

2. Wear the proper & mandatory safety equipment needed to
participate in their sport.

3. Become ineligible to play/practice if they receive a
failing grade in school.

4. Follow all the rules, guidelines and expectations
concerning the Parish including but not limited to the following:
A) Must participate in Parish or community service opportunities.

B) Must grow spiritually by involving themselves in parish religious
activities and attend mass on a regular basis.

C) Must show gospel values learned through their words & actions.

D) Must include prayer by making it a part of their practices & games.

CYO Prayer for Sportsmanship:

Dear God, every single day, no matter what sport we play, we keep
your heart, within us from the start. In the CYO, no one is treated
as a foe, so if we win or lose, we always stick together forever and
ever. Amen.

5. In addition, with permission for use from NAYS, National Alliance for
Youth Sports, each Player must realize the importance of sportsmanship and
realize that sportsmanship is the ability to win without gloating, lose
without blaming or complaining and treating their opponent and officials
with respect. Adherence to the following checklist will promote
sportsmanship:

� Abide by the rules of the game.

� Try to avoid arguments.

� Share in the responsibilities of the Team.

� Understand the playing requirements according to the league�s rules.

� Always play fair.

� Follow the directions of the coach.

� Respect the other team�s effort.

� Offer encouragement to teammates.

� Accept the judgment calls of the Officials.


Please note: Tryouts maybe required due to the roster limitations that are
mandated by individual C.Y.O. league rules. Intramural events will not have
roster limitations.

PARENTS Code of Conduct

1. Each Parent/Fan of a Sacred Heart Player must adhere to the Code of 
Conduct.

No Parent/Fan of any CYO Player is to:

� Refuse to abide by an official�s decision.

� Be guilty of objectionable demonstrations by throwing equipment or any
other forceful action.

� Be guilty of heaping personal verbal abuse upon any official for any
decision or judgment.

� Be guilty of an abusive verbal attack upon any athlete, coach, official or
spectator.

� At any time lay hands upon, push, shove, strike, threaten to strike, or
physically attack an athlete, coach, official, or spectator.



2. In addition, each parent/fan shall agree to provide positive support,
care and encouragement for their child by agreeing to:

� Encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all
players, coaches and officials at every game, practice or other CYO event.

� Place the emotional and physical well-being of their child ahead of
personal desires to win.

� Insist that their child play in a safe and healthy environment.

� Support coaches and officials working with their child, in order to
encourage a positive and enjoyable experience for all.

� Provide a sports environment for their child that is free from drugs,
tobacco, and alcohol and will refrain from their use at all events.

� Remember that the game is for youth-not adults.

� Will attempt to make youth sports fun for their child.

� Will ask your child to treat other players, coaches, fans and officials
with respect at all times.



3. Each Parent must ensure that each player wears the proper & mandatory
safety equipment needed to participate.



4. Each Parent must follow all the rules, guidelines and expectations of the
Parish including but not limited to the following expectations:

Expectations that each athlete that participates in the Sacred Heart
Athletic CYO program:

� Must participate in Parish or community service opportunities.

� Must grow spiritually by involving themselves in parish religious
activities and attend mass on a regular basis.

� Must show gospel values learned through their words & actions.

� Must include prayer by making it a part of their practices & games.



5. There are 6 key areas Parents can help children:

� Help your child set personal goals - These do not have to be about
performance. Ex. Participation.

� Help your child develop a work ethic � Let kids experience how improvement
comes with practice.

� Teach kids to respect authority � Be a role model. Show respect even if
you disagree with decisions.

� Teach young athletes to be gracious winners & losers � Deal with
disappointment & anger.

� Allow children to learn personal responsibility � Do not blame others and
be prompt.

� Give children the opportunity to become team players, congratulate hard
work and praise others.
