| Keyboarding---an Essential Communication Tool
Computers are everywhere. We use computers at home, we use computers at
school, and we use computers at work. And because of that, we find people
of all ages, people from all nations, and people from a wide variety of
careers “talking and communicating” with one another. But that
communication can be laborious and ineffective if the user does not have the
right tools. And the first tool for computer usage is basic keyboarding
skill: touch typing and basic computer knowledge—and soon “speak” typing.
We’re sending an enormous amount of e-mail messages—which now also include
graphics and photos. We’re searching the Internet for information, typing
research papers and we’re making many purchases via the Internet. And we’re
also storing a lot of critical information electronically.
All of this communicating can be time intensive if you have not mastered the
touch operation of the keyboard—your goal as a Junior High student should be
25-30 words a minute.
Once you have that basic skill, you will save time using word processing,
spreadsheet, desktop publishing, and other application programs. You will
also be able to compose at the keyboard. And you’ll take your keyboarding
skill with you into your work and home life.
A basic keyboarding skill gives you control over the most important
communication tool that you will use in the rest of your educational and
work life. Master the basics and continue to develop your skill level—
you’ll find the rewards to be many.
Good luck on this upcoming 9 week keyboarding adventure!
