Progress Folder Update
In the Progress Folders you will be seeing a lot of information! Please allow me to explain to you some of the items that may be unfamiliar:
-
Religion and Math Maintenance – each day we complete a portion of our religion and math maintenance sheets. For the first trimester I will be taking the 3 highest grades of both the religion and math maintenances and counting them as quiz grades. I anticipate completing about 7 maintenances in religion and math before the conclusion of the trimester.
For the second and third trimesters I will be taking each student’s 5 highest maintenance grades and combining them to get one test grade for each subject.
-
Journal – most weeks the students will be completing a daily Journal entry. Currently in order to complete a Journal entry the students must write three complete sentences answering the question or prompt provided. The students need to turn to turn their Journals in to me at some point before the start of class the next day. This ensures that if a student is unable to complete his or her Journal during the day he or she may take it home to complete. At then end of each week I will collect the Journals and write down the students’ grade for the week. The Journal grades will be combined at the end of each trimester to count as a major writing assignment grade (equivalent to that of a test).
Please note that as the year continues and our writing skills progress I will have higher expectations and increasethe requirements for Journal entries.
-
Homework – occasionally I will collect the students’ homework for a homework grade. I may collect the homework before we have checked it in order to see how much they have completed correctly. Other times I may collect it after we have checked it in order to see how much was completed correctly and if corrections were made. When I collect the homework after it has been checked, all questions that have been answered correctly or that have been corrected correctly will receive credit.
Progress Folders
Dear Parent(s),
In the third grade we will be using a progress folder to record and return all tests and projects. The progress folder will be sent home on Wednesdays and will contain all tests and projects returned for the week as well as a progress record sheet. The progress record sheet will be kept in the progress folder, and it will act as a weekly record of all tests and projects that are being returned.
The progress record sheet will be filled out by the student when the test or project is returned to him or her during class. The student will fill in the date the test or project has been returned, the content area of the test or project, and the grade received. Please note that BOTH the progress record sheet and all tests or projects (if applicable) should be signed and returned. This will ensure that you are seeing both the progress record sheet and the graded tests or projects, allowing you to verify that the progress records and assigned grades match.
This method will enable you to keep track of your child’s progress and view his or her work as it is completed. Once the progress folders have been signed and returned I will remove and file any tests or projects needed for my records. However, the progress record sheets will remain filled out and in the progress folder for you to review as necessary.
Additionally, please be aware that the students and I have discussed the use of the progress folders in depth as a class. The students have been informed of the purpose and expectations associated with the progress folders.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the use of these progress folders.
Thank you,
Miss Welch
