Overview of 6th Grade Honors Math

HONORS:
Since this is an honors class, this means that the 6th graders will actually be using the 7th grade textbook and will move at a faster pace than the other grade level class of 6th grade.

GOALS: The major goal is for students is trifold: 1. to master their basic mathematical operational skills, 2. to learn the basic concepts of algebra, and 3. to apply algebraic concepts to the more basic math skills and concepts the students have already learned. This ultimate goal is to prepare them for algebra as well as to see how these skills are applicable in the real world.

ALGEBRA FOUNDATION: At the beginning of the year, we will begin to delve into pre-algebra as we introduce integers and integer operations, variables, expressions, equations, and inequalities. It is essential that the students become comfortable with integer operations because these skills are applied in expressions, equations, and with use in other rational numbers.

APPLICATION OF ALGEBRA TO BASIC SKILLS: Students will review and master basic math skills such as operations with decimals and fractions, ratios and proportions, geometry, and percents. However, as they work with these previously learned skills, they will apply more algebraic concepts which often involve solving for a variable in various equations. We will also focus on studying various ways of solving word problems; however, we will always look at the option of setting up an equation to represent a real world problem in which a variable must be solved for.

GEOMETRY: Students will review basic geometry concepts and vocabulary. They will then use this foundation to work at a more complex algebraic level. They will make conjectures as to how various formulas are derived. These include formulas to find areas of various shapes--such as rectangles, trapezoids, triangles, circles--as well as the Pythagorean Theorem.

GRAPHING:
Students will be introduced functions and to graphing coordinate pairs in the coordinate plane. They will also be introduced to the concept of slope and using the slope ratio to draw a line given a coordinate pair.

SETUP OF CLASS: Students are expected to keep up with their vocabulary in their vocabulary section of their notebooks. There are vocabulary quizzes. Quizzes are given throughout the chapter. There is a chapter test which is announced ahead of time. There are weekly drills which review skills that have already been learned in order to constantly challenge the students to keep up with them and not forgot how to do them. Since it is an honors class, there are several projects that are completed as well.
