The curriculum change to the Common Core State Standards this year has prompted a change in our report card and grading. The grading system in Grade 3 will continue to be letter grades but social studies and science will no longer be graded subjects.
Social Studies and science will continue to be taught and integrated into other parts of the standards. Grading will begin in fourth grade.
The reading emphasis in kindergarten through Grade 3 is “learning to read” whereas starting in Grade 4 the emphasis shifts to” reading to learn”. Both social studies and science continue to be very important subjects for third grade. Learning to read in these content areas is essential for understanding certain skills that are necessary for academic success.
RVS Update: ELA (English Language Arts) consists of 4 components - Reading, Writing, Language, Listening & Speaking. There will be one grade for ELA listed on the report card with a + or check next to each of the 4 components to represent strengths and weaknesses. Math also consists of 4 components - Computation, Problem Solving, Modeling to Represent Concepts, and Communicating Mathmatically. The components follow the same guidelines for Math as ELA. RVS will not reflect the components. You will see only the one Math category as in the past
***NOTE CHANGE***
TAUGHT BUT NOT GRADED AT THIS LEVEL: SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, HEALTH, ART, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY***
*I have posted most grades on RVSGradebook.com. You will notice the following changes to what you see on RVSGradebook:
Instead of seeing the number of points earned/total of possible points, you will see a points value. This is how that type of assessment is weighted for that subject. For the assessment grade, you will see a number 1-6, which is equivalent to the letters grades you are used to.
6=O 5=VG 4=G 3=S 2= I 1=U
EX: On an actual spelling test you'll see: 18/20 VG
On Gradebook, it will be recorded as: 5
On the report card, your child will still receive letter grades.
Report cards will be issued on Wednesday, December 14. A
brochure explaining the new report card will be included with your child’s
report next week. Please be aware that the interpretation codes are
different on each side of the report card. The left hand side with Personal
& Social Growth and Effort & Study Skills remains the same. The right
hand side of the report card that indicates Academic Progress has changed.
One grade is given for ELA and one for Math with four subcategories listed
under each. To assess progress in these subcategories, a + or a √ is
indicated. The + indicates that the student has mastered
expectations/concepts at this level. The √ indicates the mastery of the concept
is still in progress.
