Hi. My name is Jane Mack. I am beginning my 19th year teaching
kindergarten at St. Philip Neri School. I have been a teacher in the
Archdiocese of Philadelphia for 30 years. I am a graduate of Chestnut Hill
College with a degree in elementary education. In my spare time, I like to
read, walk, bake, and spend time with my family.
Hi. My name is Peggy Naab. This is my fourth year as a teacher's aide at
Saint Philip Neri School. I am a graduate of King's College with a degree in
communications. I was a teacher in the pre-school program at St. Thomas
Episcopal Nursery School for 10 years. In my spare time, I enjoy spending
time with my family, reading, and cooking.
Early Childhood Education should be a journey, not a race. On this
journey, children travel at a different pace according to their individual
development, background experience, and needs. Our education program assists
in the development of the total child: spiritually, physically, emotionally,
and intellectually. Kindergarten is a developmental readiness program. In
kindergarten, we hope to create an enthusiasm for learning. We are deepening
and strengthening the skills that are the foundation for all future learning.
Successful developmental experiences in early childhood education will
prepare children for the formal academic programs in the grades. Our
kindergarten program helps to form this solid foundation.
Children in this age group learn differently than those just a year or
two older. Kindergarten children learn through activities and experiences.
The teacher's job is to arrange the environment and curriculum to help
develop the skills needed in first grade. This is accomplished in a warm,
caring, risk-free environment. The curriculum is mostly about the child and
his/her world. The environment is arranged to help the child learn and
develop: fine motor skills, thinking, language, listening skills,
responsibility, social skills, fun of discovery, love of books and reading,
self-esteem, and self-confidence. Our children are encouraged to develop a
positive image of themselves, and to respect others as they begin to live the
Gospel Message.
Our teachers' mission is not only to help the children grow emotionally
and academically. Teachers are to be role models who guide the spiritual and
social development of the children. Teachers model and manifest Catholic
beliefs, values, and attitudes on a daily basis.
